A homeless man in Boston turned in a lost backpack containing nearly $42,000 in checks and cash over the weekend, officials confirmed.

The man, whom Boston police did not identify, approached officers outside a TJ Maxx store in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester around 6 p.m. Saturday with a black backpack. The man told authorities he found the bag, which contained a passport and a large sum of money, in front of the store.

Inside the backpack, police found $2,400 cash and $39,500 in American Express travelers' checks. The bag also contained passports and "various personal papers," according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.

Just an hour later, around 7 p.m., Saturday, an employee from a Best Buy store near the TJ Maxx store where the backpack was found, contacted police to report a male customer who said he had lost a backpack containing, "a large sum of money."

After matching the name and photo on the Republic of China passport found in the backpack to the Best Buy customer who reported his backpack missing, Boston police returned the bag and money to the man, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department declined to offer any additional details when reached today by ABCNews.com but said the department may hold a press conference later on today in regards to the case.

Homeless man in Boston honored

A homeless man in Boston was honored Monday for flagging down police after he discovered a bag filled with $2,400 in cash and nearly $40,000 in travelers checks, The Boston Globe reported.

Last summer, Glen James, who is in his 50s and lives in a homeless shelter, noticed a young man at the South Bay plaza in Boston leave behind a large bag, the report said. James observed the bag?s contents, and alerted police because ?God has always very well looked after me.?

?Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a penny,? he wrote in a statement due to embarrassment about a speech impediment.

James received a citation from Boston?s police commissioner and there has been a website made, www.gofundme.com/4by2as,  to raise money for James, who said he receives food stamps and panhandles at times because ?It?s just nice to have some money in one?s pockets so that as a homeless man I don?t feel absolutely broke all the time.?

$50k Goal? For being a decent Human? Or is it because he's homeless? Why don't we raise $50K for a random doctor that just saved somebodies life; OH, that's right, they already have enough money, don't they? FFS. People have the worst priorities sometimes.

How about everyone complaining just do good things all the time so that people wont take notice when someone else do good things?

I saw it was bumped to $250K and thought I hope it makes it close to that. 50K can burn in no time when you are starting from zero plus this guy is 50+, so even if he got cleaned up and went out to try getting a job, it wouldn't be easy for him anyways so he'll probably end up homeless again pretty soon without some cushion to fall back on for a few months. Employers aren't looking to hire 50yr olds these days.

I'm glad he's getting all the recognition he's getting as if anything it will urge more people to do the same thing. I can honestly say it wouldn't be so easy for me to give back all that money.... call me what you wish but hey i'm honest.

I probably would feel guilty and give it back but i'd definitely think long and hard about it. :(
