iPhone 5S and 64 bit apps; how to update?

Recommended Posts

Since iPhone 5S will be the first iPhone with 64 architecture I am wondering how installed apps will get 64 bit?

I mean I can restore my 32 bit backup onto it, but will my apps be automatically be updated to 64 bit app once this has become available? Or need I do this manually?

the process should be transparent to users as always and as it should be. developers can use new version of xcode to recompile all apps to take advantages of (any) new features.

And the 64 bit app will be automatically shown once available and updated over the 32 bit ones? So user friendly and no need reinstalling the apps

Don't be so sure guys

According to a note Apple posted on its iOS Dev Center today ? and subsequently removed for reasons unknown ? apps designed to support both iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices will be 32-bit only until the company finishes work next month on a new specification supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit code in a single app binary.

Here?s what the announcement read before it got pulled:

You can submit 64-bit apps for iOS 7 today that take advantage of the power of iPhone 5s. Xcode can build your app with both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries included so it works across all devices running iOS 7.

If you wish to continue to support iOS 6 then you will need to build for 32-bit only. Next month we will be making changes that will allow you create a single app binary that supports 32-bit on iOS 6, as well as 32-bit and 64-bit on iOS 7.

The way I read Apple?s announcement, 64-bit apps optimized for the iPhone 5s?s A7 processor might be provided as separate downloads from those that are 32-bit and iOS 6 compatible until the firm finishes specification of the combined 32/64-bit binaries.

developer side. unlikely this will trickle down to the end users. itunes and download servers will take care of the messy business of downloading & installing the right versions to your iphone.

Yeh, this is Apple we're talking about, everything the do is designed to make the user experience seemless, that's one of its main advantages over android.

When 64-bit apps are available, devs will publish them and iOS will update you from the 32-bit to the 64-bit. It'll just be like any other app update you've ever done.
