I recently ordered this $98 blu-ray player for my theater, because my parents have my PS3. Upon reciving the player I made a mistake and forgot to check to see if the player had SPDIF out. That is how I hook up to my sound system as I don't have a reciever. So I gave my parents his new player and took back my PS3.

 

But upon testing stuff out on this player before giving it to them, I tested the following file formats and was quite surprised by what I found.

 

Mp4

MOV

AVI

MKV

 

All played without issue. The videos also resumed automatically.  What really surprised me is this player also supported an NTFS formatted USB Drive (was not expecting that). The player also has Netfix (duh) and Amazing Instant Video and a crap ton of other video services built in. The videos also played from a Disc.

 

Just wanted to let every know who is looking for this type of Blu-ray player and doesn't want to buy a Ps3 (heck the Ps3 doesn't even support mkv)

 

The only thing it doesn't do is play over the network, at least not that I can tell. As far as the actual  Blu-ray playback disc loading times seemed very quick.

Cool. I'd be interested to know if it bitstreams HD audio formats over HDMI for M2TS and MKV containers, and if it supports native 24fps output for said files.

If you're using SPDIF it won't anyway and my rips are all 18+ GB in size.

This doesn't support SPDIF just HDMI, which is why i'm giving it to my parents.

Well I gave it to my parents shortly after making this thread. For them it has replaced their WDTV box and they LOVE this thing.

The Price of this player has just dropped by $10 it's now $78. I'm still sticking by my review that this player is AMAZING! My mom said and I quite

Lots of players can read mkv files. The problem often lies with audio codecs, especially DTS. Lots of electronics devices don't have it because of licensing fees.

 

I'd like to know as well if it can decode/bitstream dts audio files within an mkv.

afaik the player doesn't support 24p playback of MKV files. MKVs are always being played back in 60p.

i think i read this on the avsforum.
