Sony's PlayStation 4 upgrade program gets detailed: $10 for a next-gen copy

Back at Gamescom 2013, Sony made it known that select cross-generational games, like Call of Duty: Ghosts, purchased for the PlayStation 3 would be upgradeable for its forthcoming PS4. At the time, Sony kept general pricing details for the program under wraps, although Activision did announce its qualifying CoD title would set PS4 users back $10 bucks for the next-gen upgrade privilege. Now, Sony's coming clean with the full spate of its upgrade program, adding Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs to the list -- all for $10.

So how does it work? Well, for those gamers that insist on purchasing a physical copy of any of the above games, they'll receive a redeemable pack-in code which they can enter into the PlayStation Network for a digital copy of the PS4 version. That's not all though. In order to unlock that next-gen copy, the physical disc has to be in the console to activate it. The process is much simpler for those that opt for the all-digital route, as a PS3 purchase made on PSN will automatically qualify gamers for the discount, at which point the game will be available for download. You have to hand it Sony: with news of this expanded upgrade program and the PS4's Gaikai-powered PS3 backwards compatibility, it seems the company's well learned from the lessons of previous gen's past.

Good news, that means that both consoles now have a good upgrade program in place at the same price.

It seems both MS and Sony see the value in this and realize that it could help make up for launch lineups that are regularly lacking for the mass market.

So if we want to upgrade, we can only get a digital copy?

That's a good point.  I didn't realize that at first, but it does seem to clearly say this is only for a digital version.  I know with the X1 program, you can also get physical copies, so its a little strange that Sony would limited it only to digital.

What i'm curious of with these "upgrade" deals is what happens to your save games. Do they transfer to the new game, or do you have to start over? If the latter, you're better off just waiting to buy the next-gen version.

Another good point.

I don't know how they could transfer your saves considering they are based on a game that is incompatible with the next gen version. Although, if the save data is in a simple form, maybe it is easy, I'm not sure how that works.

With Battlefield and COD your stats, unlocks etc. carry over so you don't need to start over again online and if you have Premium or the Season Pass, that also follows at no extra charge.

Couldn't say with the other games.

So how big will these digital copies be, seeing how their disc based counterparts come on blu-ray?

most of these games even Wii U which uses 50GB discs are no bigger than 20gigs.  Not exactly a small amount but not the full blu ray disc amount.

There is more news on the program.

Apparently, if you do this, you will have to use your ps3 copy in the ps4 to verify it and then you can buy the digital copy of the ps4 version.

The hitch is that you will now have to insert your ps3 copy into the ps4 anytime you want to play that game.  Meaning that if you want to play the ps4 version, you cannot sell your ps3 copy.

Which makes perfect sense. Otherwise you're buying a PS4 game for $10.

Wierd, guy behind the counter at my local Game, said you have to swap like for like on the disc version of the game, so long as it was one of the games on the list. Oh well no big loss on a 500gb hard drive I guess.

Well there is some confusion on this.

Sony is not the only one that has programs for an 'upgrade' deal.

Amazon and Gamestop have their own programs, independent of Sony or MS, that offer you the deal that you can trade in your current game and get the next version for $10 more.  In that case, your trading a physical copy for another physical copy.

This is a Sony specific deal where you can only redeem the ps4 version in the form of a digital copy.  So if you want a physical copy, look at Amazon or Gamestop and make use of their deal.
