Microsoft: Stand the Xbox One any way you like, as long as it's flat

We're still a couple of months away from the launch of the Xbox One, but if you've already cleared out a welcoming cubbyhole in anticipation, then we hope you've pictured the next-gen console lying down. Speaking with GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, top Xbox bod Albert Panello said the One doesn't "support vertical orientation," or: you shouldn't stand it up. Panello explains the console's slot-loading drive simply wasn't designed for operating in that position, and if you're a rebellious type that laughs at the threat of busted hardware, you'll be ignoring official advice "at your own risk."

I had my original white 360 vertical but then with my 360S and the new top vent I have it down flat which is better for overall airflow. Since the XB1 shares the same type of top vent design it's best to have it flat.

Oh no what ever am i going to do!?!?!

Think this was pretty obvious, this is a pretty substantial consumer device and it was obviously designed to operate horizontally.

Looks hell-u-va lot better that way anyway.

Why would it be obvious if last gen you could operate on the side, and this gen the PS4 does?

You have eyes no?

And feet, and hands, and legs....

The Wii, PS3 and PS4 all do slot loading, it's not as if slot loading cannot be done horizontally.

Stop trying to find fault for the sake of it. If they want it to be flat, what's the problem? So what if other consoles do it? I'm sure you'll have a lovely time with your vertically stacked consoles. enjoy.

Getting defensive over other peoples opinions to do with how a console can be placed, hope the viewers only enjoy their glimpse of Neowin.

alright, that's it.... I am suing Microsoft! I had $30,000 custom cabinets made just for vertically aligned consoles! This destroys my investment! Boycott MS! Make them change specs at the last minute and cause massive world wide delays! </s>

The funny thing is that some seem to want to make something out of this, just one look at the design and you can tell it's meant to sit horizontally and not be vertical. It's also better for airflow this way period. Who cares if it can't stand vertical? Is this a make or break option for why you would buy one or not?

And the original massively sized PS3 shouted put me vertically?

Anyway, Albert's reasoning isn't even the size, dimensions or air flow of the console, it's the disc drive. Hence why I threw out a completely rational objection to the claim, how come other slot loading drives work fine? Have MS tested it and it scratches discs? If so wouldn't you want to avoid that and use a slot loading drive that doesn't do that instead of relying on the general public not potentially doing something they've done for generations?

Considering Sony showed it off in the vertical position from the get go then what more do you need? MS has never showed the XB1 in that position and you see it doesn't have legs to keep the side vent from being closed off if you place it vertical.

A bit more detail about the disc drive? It's the first time we've had a claim that a disc drive won't work on it's side. They have been for generations. Again, vents, legs or physical construction wasn't the reason Albert gave. If you're all for believing MS then I don't know why you're all telling me it's "x,y,z" that causes the console not to work on it's side where MS are saying it's "t".

Because my original comment stated that when I first saw it I could tell it was meant to be used in the horizontal position and not be placed vertical. I never commented on the drive only how it looked to me when I first saw the boxes design. Even early reviewer videos showed that the design was done with horizontal and not vertical as the placement. This was months before we got Alberts excuse which I can't comment about because as you say we don't know anything about the drive.

Seems more rational than oh say, someone purposely going into a thread about a console he has no interest for the sole purpose of attacking it over a minor details pretty much no one cares about, except the attacker who uses it as a neena neena.

Very mature behaviour.

Granted they're not saying it won't work vertical, they're saying they didn't design, test or support it.

If no one cares why are some of you getting your panties in such a twist over what I'm posting? That doesn't scream "pretty much no one cares". The exact opposite actually, "I care so much about not caring if anyone else does cares I need to tell them I don't care because I care feverishly about not caring.".

To be fair he just said the drive wasn't designed to work on its side, not that it won't. There are extra considerations you have to make so that discs don't scratch when operating vertically and such. But in either case, what does it matter?
