BajiRav Posted September 20, 2013 Share Posted September 20, 2013 There has to be a logical reason MS makes the power supply external. I'm not going to believe that they do it just because they can. Engineers worked on this console and came to the conclusion that an external power supply was necessary. Again, I still think MS chose to do that in order to remove as much heat from the console as possible, allowing them to use a large fan to move air but at a lower sound profile. But I'm also not sure how an external power supply is a disadvantage though. The only negative I can come up with is an aesthetic issue (i.e. you don't like how it looks), but is there a technical disadvantage? Comparing this to the ps4 as the evidence that an external is not a good idea seems tough considering there are many different variables between the two consoles. Of course, if you want to assume that Sony has great engineers and MS has poor engineers, then you can just chalk it up to the X1 being poorly engineered. That's the easy answer I suppose. I firmly believe the PSU is external for these two reasons, - They wanted a silent console which meant a larger fan that needed more space inside it. - They've had no problems with X360's external PSUs, so it is a known entity when everything else is different. The external PSU is a non-issue mostly and is being talked about only because PS4 has internal PSU. If PS4 is as quiet as XBO, then we can call Microsoft's efforts lacking. Those that do probably have other issues combined with not liking a power brick. That however doesn't mean you DO like it, you can still own it and hate it. I got rid of most of my external PC hard drives due to annoying power bricks a few months ago, finally ponnied up for a 2TB internal drive. Why make this thread then? Not to mention Microsoft had enough heat related issues with the 360. As I see it, if it's internal or external, it isn't a deal breaker but I see the logic in it being external. I can't see any valid reason to prefer an external PSU, not when the Xbox One is physically larger than the PlayStation 4. In fact the external PSU for the Xbox 360 was responsible for a lot of stability issues, especially when it was placed on carpets or rugs. And really, is there any question about the power brick on the 360 being nothing short of awful? That does not mean the console is awful. It also does not mean it is inferior in any way to the PS3. However the PSU is a monstrosity and a pain in the ass for anyone who tries to keep a tidy entertainment center such as myself. So a little humor about this fact is a big deal why? Not to mention Microsoft had enough heat related issues with the 360. It's not being forgotten but as I pointed out, and you reiterated, the X360 was more unreliable despite having an external PSU. You have your rabid fanboys that can't take a joke, but then you also have those that like to stoke the fire, keep the arguments going, etc. Its just a twitter joke that is meant to get a laugh and maybe tweak people. I personally prefer an internal power brick just on the basis of looks, but then since my consoles are in a cabinet, I have yet to see the power bricks, so it has little impact on me. As far as the humor part. I'm not sure why some can't take it easy, but this isn't exactly a new joke. Of course some might say they find the one sided nature of these jokes to be tiring.
