SSD write speed after SATA3 upgrade ridiculously low, help needed

Hello! I've recently upgraded my computer with a motherboard with SATA3 and a new processor. But for some reason my SSD write ridiculously slow! Weird thing is that my read speed is as high as ever.

(I had to cancel the test when it was testing Random Write since it went really, really slow)

 

Have anyone encountered a similar problem or have any clue what might be the problem? Thanks for taking your time to read!

 

Specifications:

  • SSD: Samsung SSD 830 series 128GB
  • CPU: AMD fx-8350 @4.0Ghz
  • Motherboard: M5A99X EVO R2.0
  • RAM: 2x4GB Kingston @1600Mhz
  • Operating system: Windows 8 Pro 64bit

Is the SSD on the black or gray SATA ports for that Motherboard?

Never mind that as its for the old M5A99X EVO.

 

Check the BIOS settings for SATA mode and set to AHCI

 

Thank you for your response! It is in the SATA3 port and I already do have it on AHCI mode, as you could tell from the high read speeds.

 

It's just so weird, I have no clue at all of what's wrong!

No. There is zero difference between SATA, SATA2 and SATA3 cables.

 

Yes. Try a new cable. Bad cables happen all the time, regardless if there is no difference between SATA cables.

Is the firmware of the SSD up-to-date?  I'm assuming it probably is, but it doesn't hurt to ask. :)

More info that might help narrow down the underlying problem:

As you can see the write Acc.time is very high, it should be around .1-.3 for this disk, at least when I compare it with other results with the same disk.

I had the same issue with my 840 Pro SSD.  I was beating my head on a wall trying to figure out what was going on.  I updated my chipset drivers and rebooted; speeds were back to normal.

 

I don't know if updating the drivers actually made a difference but I'll take it....

I have the latest chipset drivers and SATA-drivers already, thanks for response though! :)

 

I've had issues with AMD controllers and SSD's, only sata3 though.  I bet if you set to sata2 your write speeds shoot up but at the sata2 limit.

I'll test this to see if we can narrow down the cause of the problem. EDIT: Welp, problem is I don't have a SATA2 port on my board, only sata3's

Switched to a new cable, same results in write speed and Acc.time

Bad cables do happen indeed, but the symptoms are different. The point of that post is to clear away your misinformation.

 

OP:

To exclude cabling/connector issues, may want to look if following Data values of SMART may have increased lately or are actively increasing while testing:

0xBC - Command Timeout

0xC7 - UltraDMA CRC Error Count

Well look at that! I rolled back to the driver called "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" instead of "AMD SATA Controller" like this thread suggested and the speed is now like normal!

I've had a similar problem and this was the cause; I had, not knowing what it is for, disabled ' write caching' in the device manager, resulting in similar write speed problem like the above. I would appear to be a problem of the ssd controller; my old sandforce drive doesn't have this problem, but a new tlc SMI drive does; it needs write caching to achieve its write potential. there seems to be no information about this on the net, and that is why I signed up here to advise people never to disable write caching in the device manager, not for any drive because hdds also benefit from this (doubled random write speed!)

Mickez, your experience might be explained differently; after you've installed new sata drivers all the drives were recognized as new drives and therefor the settings in the device manager were reset, and write caching is enabled by default.
