Both. Manufacturers are lazy. They also change a lot of aspects of Android to incorporate their bloatware which delay updates further. Carriers take time to include additional bloatware and to lock down features.

it's a matter of fragmentation vs choices. you reap what you sow with your purchases.

 

i seriously doubt microsoft/google intended their os to generate excitement such as apple's throughout almost the _entire_ platform with each os updates.

Well that's Android, but what about Nokia? I don't think Nokia is lazy, but there are people on AT&T who are still waiting for GDR2 update.

Apple has a grand total of what, 5 phones and 4 tablets or so to update per new OS? Android and WP have hundreds. Apple builds all of their phones, so they can push an OTA out to every single one of them and update them easily whereas something like Android has to have all the OEMs update their code for each phone, and as previously mentioned, then the carriers get their stab at adding bloat and locking out features. That's not to say that you can't buy a Nexus or GPE device though and get updates just as fast like Apple does. It just depends on what you choose to buy. I suspect with MS acquiring Nokia's mobile line that they may become somewhat akin to what Nexus devices are to Android.

No, carriers take time to test, and test some more, and do it at a leisurely pace because they don't see it as a profitable venture.

 

Carriers do not add bloat themselves, ever.  They have the OEM do it.

The answer is in your statement itself. The Carrier is to blame for Nokia phones not receiving updates. :)

Definitely the benefit of having everything under one roof. There are still plenty of issues though, on update day my twitter was filled with rants and issues. Also found it very strange that they released the update in the middle of the work day and made it hard/impossible to cache it on proxies. It killed our internet connection, there is a reason most companies push updates at 3am local time.

Easier to support homogenous hardware. The massive number of choices for Android come at a cost. I don't know what Microsoft's excuse is. They made a major effort pushing the idea that their Windows Phone OS was going to have good update cycles but they really dropped the bar. The WP7 -> WP8 was especially messy and the reason why I'm staying clear from windows phone.

I'm not surprised everyone has updated. I guess that sort of kills the notion that only nerds care about such things. My wife, who has no interest in technology, heard about the update from a friend and couldn't wait to get it.

After over 2 months, I'm starting to think that AT&T is holding out on the GDR2 update for 920 users so that people will just buy a 925 or a 1020 by now.

Carriers and manufacturers are more interested in getting you to buy new phones with bundled airtime plans than updating their existing lineup.
