SteamOS

I do not think they can compete. I am sure if they tailor the OS correctly, towards gaming, the experience could be great. No hassle with drivers ... etc. Repi (twttier.com/repi) , one of the designers of frostbite says, the best driver is no driver!

Titles like BF4 will not come to this platform. I can see a few, but it is hard to succeed when you do not have the games!

Valve tossing out ideas and seeing what sticks?   Next up is a steam box or w/e and let's all hope it sells!   I'll just get the new consoles and PC game on my PC.

Well if/when they announce a Steam Box, this will certainly take away the cost of licensing Windows on it.

Looks like there are 2 more announcements coming in a few days.

Personally, I'm hoping for something involving the Oculus Rift.

at least they openly come out and say its not possible to play all games on it, and that you will need a beefy machine in order to stream your games from your computer to the steam OS client.

With Gabe's comments about Windows 8 the past year I think it was safe to assume that a Linux based OS with Steam at the heart of it was going to be on the cards so I don't find this all that surprising. I hope they can make good on what they say about improving graphics and audio performance as these are two areas which Linux is a real PITA.

With recent things like the Humble Bundles pushing Linux support for indie games it has shown developers and publishers that they can make money on Linux ports. A nice example is that Sega are publishing Football Manager 2014 for Linux for the first time. It is a small step but at least it is in the right direction :)

As I wrote as frontpage comment: It's too early to write off SteamOS as DOA yet. Let's wait for Valve to announce which hardware OEMs and which game publishers are on board.

I believe the goal of Steam OS is not to compete with Windows or related, but to turn your PC into a multimedia only computer! So any PC with Steam OS will become an instant Steam Box

I'll probably stick this on a $200 nettop, and use it to stream from my main PC to my living room. I see it as being more useful for streaming than natively playing games. You could even install this on a linux phone mounted to a controller and have something like a homemade nvidia shield.

Anything that takes away from Windows sales is in competition with it.

It woudl be great to have an unified platform just for games, windows can get all the programs they want in the professional sector, but as a media and entertainment user I'm tired of their tactics as of late.

Steam OS clearly sounds like something to compete with PS4 and/or Xbox One. What I have read is that it will be a free media and gaming platform OS, that can install on any PC in your living room. So it will turn essentially any pc connected to your tv into a PS4/Xbox One like game console.

I'm in. If this plays all my games, I'm done with Windows. I'm very anxous to try this out!

Edit:

Down at the bottom, under "All the Games you love", it says there's more games coming in 2014. It could just be marketing hype, or Mr. Newall has an amazing charisma and managed to get a lot more devs onboard.

They might be able to pull this off, I am just not sure. The threat they feel from Windows must be immense. I would hope Microsoft would continue to foster DirectX and allow 3rd party app stores like Origin and Steam!

I've been a big fan from the start of Windows 8 but Valve have absolutely nothing to fear from the Windows store, it's a huge damp squib and I don't see it getting any better.

If every game developer out there ports to OpenGL instead of DirectX it will be a wonderful thing. Until then....

Porting to/using OGL doesn't magically make a game multi platform.

Actually, it prunes like... what, 90% of the difficulties to port them? the other 10% is the OpenGL implementation... on the host side. If valve does is ok, then they will get a better OpenGL implementation than most if not all Linux distros... hence the beginning of the gaming era on SteamOS. I'm perfectly fine with it.
