The Windows Phone (RT) Docking Station That Never Was

Recommended Posts

I saw the surface conference and haven't been able to stop thinking that they missed the boat when it came to the docking of the surface tablet for use at a desk via the docking station with monitor, speaks, mouse etc

I always invisaged that we'd have a Windows phone that we'd carry around with us doing basic tasks and then dock it for a full blown RT session. As we've already seen with Android hand sets starting to make the move to this type of set up, Microsoft needs to act fast.

Here is a mock up of what I expected.

A Windows Phone just like you have now, and then When you slide it into the dock, you get access to a full RT system. Shared drive space, same Microsoft account same Skype contacts etc. Same pictures and skydrive, you know.

It's too early for that. They will have to make WP run RT apps or replace WP with RT completely. Then it would make more sense to make a dock for a phone.

We already have a lot of this.  I log in to my Surface and my Windows Phone using the same Microsoft Account and both are linked to my Exchange mail account so I already have access to the same contacts, skype account details, skydrive, etc.

As for the future, I would be more interested in an x86 based Windows Phone that could be used as a phone when mobile and then docked to act as a full blown PC with access to desktop apps.  I have no need to dock a Windows RT tablet because that version of Windows isn't really designed to be used on a desktop.

while i personally think that the whole, phone docking into a personal computer concept is very cool When android tried it, it failed, and i think that if the ubuntu phone can ever get off the ground it will probably fail as well.

Agreed.  The technology isn't available yet and Linux/Android-based solutions are doomed to failure because they lack Win32 applications.  We're already starting to see the lines between PCs and tablets blurring thanks to Windows 8 and Baytrail/Haswell and in time this might extend to phones too.

Ubuntu has / is doing this. Hook up smart phone to a dock station hooked to a monitor and turn it into a desktop to a computer.
