What's the best hosting service for my WordPress site?

Question

Hi everyone,

I'm starting my blog powered by WordPress very soon.

But have no idea what hosting service to use.

I've checked some sites to compare, but some comments are obviously paid

and talk about nothing but good thing. And that's not what I want.

Please let me hear your real experience or your rumors from our friends.

Thanks!!

Amy

uhh.... what kind of blog are you talking about? wordpress.com might be a good place to start so you don't have to worry about the nitty gritty technical stuff. you can always export everything to a custom installation when you outgrow it.

I'm using asmallorange.com, and they have massive amount of scripts to auto install (set up folders, files, database, etc) content management systems.

I set my page up using wordpress that way, and even supports the new autoupdate feature in current wordpress version.

http://www.etanime.com

I don't know if asmallorgane is the best, but I've been happy with the service.

<Thread Moved>

Seems more appropriate in this section of the forum. Also, be sure to check the pinned topic about Neowin's top hosts.

the post was made in 2003 and most of the links are no longer there.

This is from a 1 post wonder - I personally think its just spam.. Will be back later, and say they found this great host, etc.  Here is the link check it out sort of thing.  Come on their pic is for a wordpress theme site for gosh sake.

for wordpress the absolute best hosting would be to pay for the Premium hosting through wordpress itself.

the post was made in 2003 and most of the links are no longer there.

That's odd, because it looks like the latest update was from September of this year. Are you volunteering to update the links? ;)

EDIT: I should probably point out that I'm serious. If you want to contact me and let me know what is outdated and what can remain, maybe even provide some links of your own, I won't hesitate to get involved and help you.

That thread is a bit unwieldy for one - its 23 pages long ;)  And the date range is very large - as stated it was started in 2003, til you are correct I would call sept 2013 current..  But its unlikely that anyone would work through 23 pages of hosting sites.

Maybe like the firewall and antivirus threads there should be a yearly reset on the thread and people can post who they are using currently and why, or still using and why, etc.

I do like the idea of a place for people to post who they are using and why for different hosting needs, be it vps, shared, seedbox, vpn has be a somewhat common topic lately, etc.  I think it should be reset so that that links are always no older than a year.

Would it be possible to maintain list in say the first post or so with link to site, and then link to person(s) promoting their use review post?  I would be up in helping maintain such a thread - I am serious I would be very open to helping maintain such a list.

BTW - the thread is prob going to need some mod, because it will be a breeding ground for spam links from 1 post wonders ;)

And question comes up in such a thread, the posting or suggesting PM the poster for referral links.  Something allowed in such a thread, or still a no no??  For example couple of my hosts do allow for me to get referrals and their use could be win win for both parties involved.  But can also be misused.. So it should be clearly stated in the threads first post if referrals are allowed or not, etc.

Also - would it be possible to merge comments for multiple people using the same host?  This way if only single post for each host, likes could be given to that post if you have nothing extra to add to what is already given in the review of the host, etc.

I recommend dreamhost because they are a bit more lenient on what you can do compared to some other hosts.

I am not sure if this promo still works but here is a link for $100 off shared hosting which makes it $20 for the first year. I would try it.
http://www.dreamhost.com/promo/lifehackerapril/?utm_source=sharedlifehacker&utm_medium=content&utm_campaign=save100lifehacker

And here is one that is current and goes until 11/10/2013 for $2.95/month

http://www.dreamhost.com/promo/hosting295/?utm_campaign=6436&utm_term=dreamhost%20cheap&utm_medium=google&utm_source=trada&utm_nooverride=1&utm_content=37765470689

Both come with a free domain registration for a year as well.

Good idea. If you want to make the thread, I'll pin it and help maintain it. (Y)

I agree that it should be reset every year...

Best Host - 2013 Edition

Some hosts change their plans, their services, their customer service, and things like that...This way it would be more current, and people don't just skip to the last page...

Plus, it doesn't get updated all that often. If it was reset every year, maybe there would be a little more activity there, and then we can get less people making threads about which host they should be using.

I don't mind starting the post - but maybe some discussion before hand on what is possible, what is not can happen.  I am curious about the referral links for starters.  If no no its a no no, and have no problems with that.  On the other I wouldn't mind maybe getting some referrals - but than again on other hand it kind of takes away from review if you ask me..  I might be just ok with them, and might have have some issues - but hey if can get the hosting for free via referrals than can live with it and might give a glowing review in trying to get those.

So in general I would have to say no to any sort of referrals or even hinting of PM me for link sort of comments in the posts.

Also where might be the best place for such a thread.. With the other types of hosting available and used, not sure web design is actually best place.. Maybe the general internet, networking security thread.  Since you have all types of hosts now - not just web pages.  Exchange hosting, VPN, Blogging, Seeding, Cloud hosting, etc. etc.  Not sure Web Design / Programming is best location.

A Small Orange - stay away, sold to EIG (Endurance International Group)

HostGator - the same, sold to EIG

DreamHost - sold to EIG

Bluehost - sold to EIG

HostMonster - sold to EIG.....and the list continues here and here also.

Right now if you are looking for cheap, reliable shared hosting you should try those in this order:

  • MDDHosting
  • StableHost
  • HawkHost

If you put it somewhere other than here, you need a pinned link to it in this section, otherwise people will most likely continue to ask here, instead of checking else where on the forums

DreamHost - sold to EIG

Where did you get this info, because its wiki link you pointed too. And if you google it a JOKE comes up on their blog from 2011 about having 5.3 million in their account and cpanel for everyone, etc.

So no dreamhost has not been sold to eig from anything I can tell. The blog and newsletter links are April Fools jokes ;)
