Sales Advisor Job at Currys

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

A part-time sales advisor position has became available at my local Currys/PC World store, and I'm just wondering if anyone here currently works, or has worked there before.

The reason I ask is that I'd like to know how the recruitment process goes. I'm currently filling in my online application, but I'm more interested in those that got through to the interview. Yes, I may be getting a bit ahead of myself and may not get an interview, but I like to be prepared. An electrical/electronics store job would be perfect for me!

I understand it probably varies between stores, but in general, which kind of questions did they ask you? Did you have to do any tests, like maths etc? (I don't mean how well you can dance btw :p).

If it is of any use, I don't have any previous sales experience, and the application put this as "OK" rather than "Good", but I have a strong interest in technology, and I need to start somewhere with sales. I'm just wondering if anyone that got the job is similar to me, in not having that sales experience.

All help is appreciated!

Enough with the dancing! :p

So I had a short telephone interview, then a follow up call, and now have an in-store interview arranged for this week.

Got an email now with the information about my interview, which seems pretty straightforward. The only part about I'm unsure about from the email is this:

'5 Minutes to Impress?
This activity is exactly what it sounds like. You will have 5 minutes to impress us! Sometimes you might leave an interview feeling like you haven?t had an opportunity to really sell yourself. We would like to give you the chance to really let us know who you are, what makes you special and unique, and why we simply must offer you the chance to join our team. There are no restrictions (but one... no PowerPoint please) ? you can talk about / do anything you like whether it is work related or a passion outside of work.

I sort of get the idea, but has anyone got any advice on this? Anyone who has worked at Currys before had to do this?

If that was me I would look at some of the PUA routines....If there are females on the interview panels, Play a game with them like Cold Reading. Make them feel special ;-) Palm Reading or whatever.

Drop your trousers, wink and say "see you Monday" and leave.

Seriously though, just sell yourself as a sales advisor in the 5 minutes. Think what makes a good sales advisor and say you're that.

Honestly you need no computing and/or technical knowledge to get a job at Currys. They hire salespeople, not technicians.

If you're able to sway people into buying what you're selling and overcome peoples objections then you'll fit right in.

You are the product and they are the customers, just let them know that what you are showing is what they are looking for. That's basically what you'll be doing if you get the job.

Sales people are expected to be outgoing, self-confident, easy-going and able to address questions with confidence. Since there are no restrictions about what to do in those five minutes you could bring anything you are particulary interested in without relation to work and talk about it, trying to get the interviewers to participate.

Act as if it was an informal conversation you were feeling comfortable with, rather than standing there talking.

I worked for pc world when it first opened and while things may have changed the key word was SALES, a few tips of the kind of thing they like.

Be assumptive - For example at the end of the interview ask, so what happens next? this suggests that you wont wait for the client to buy you will be pushing for the sale.

Think about the extras - they make the profit in batteries, and insurance.

use features and benefits, people buy benefits, ie a fast processor (feature) lets you play powerful games (benefit)

Watch the language you use, i was specifically trained to add "init"or similar to the end of sentences, I think this is called positive reinforcement, you force people to say yes in their heads, or give you an objection which you can then over come.

ie

So you said

you wanted a laptop (nod)

with a large hard drive to store lots of stuff (features and benefits)

so this is what your looking for isnt it?

- yes

So how were you planning on paying? (assumptive close)

PS

I got sacked, I couldnt in good faith sell what they wanted us to push, ie packard bells that were constantly coming back with faults but had a high profit margin.

Yep, it's all sell, sell, sell.  You sell yourself well enough, they'll know you can sell their products, turn negatives into positives and so on.

If you work in a big box store you don't have to know **** about technology.

Case and point

So i just talked to someone from best buy when a customer of mine was there looking for a PC.

My customer left the paper I gave her at home and didn't remember what to get. I said well 6GB of ram and what CPU does the machine you are looking at in the store have? She had no clue so she gave me to the gal on the floor that was helping her. I asked her which CPU does that computer have?

she couldn't find the info

she said it doesn't say, they just redesigned the boxes, all it says is 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB, it doesn't have a CPU type

ok so repeat that conversation about 5 times as it turns out.. she thought the needed a new hard drive, not a new computer

they were looking at new hard drives

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
