Xbox One to include 'follower' system, new gamercards

It's being reported that Microsoft will take inspiration from Twitter when it comes to finding friends on Xbox One.

 

The system means that users can have for unlimited followers, according to Destructoid although your friend limit will still be locked at 1,000.

Since anyone who is a follower isn't necessarily a friend, we aren't sure what stats they'll be able to see, although Achievements, Challenges and Games Played are likely to be public.

There will also be new high definition gamercards, a sample of which you can see in the picture below.

I think this is a pretty useful idea, a way to keep your friends list from blowing up with people that you had to add just for wanting to follow you.  Now they can literally just be a follow and see what your up to without being part of your actual friends list.

 

I think this plays into the gameplay video sharing aspect of it.

 

It sort of makes it work like a youtube channel.  You can now become an X1 video caster and anyone can follow you and watch your videos as you post them without you having to allow a ton of people to join your friends list.

Having this follower system is better than just having normal friends because now you and others can "follow" people, mostly for when you do some MP etc and not have to fill up your "friends" list with people you don't actually know at all.  This way the two groups are split so the people I do actually know are in my friends list and those that I probably played some MP with in Halo or w/e can just follow me and vice versa.

Can't see this being a feature I'm interested, the last thing I need is yet another form of social media to go with the others. I understand each company want to be the default SM that everyone goes to but I would be far more interested in them just integrating with the other known ones like Facebook and Twitter.

I don't think they want to take this to that extent, this is a way to keep your friends list clean and just have your friends while you can have people follow you who might want to just play some multiplayer with you in a game or two.  It's better than filling up your friends list with people you don't really know, IMO.

I don't recall the last time I played a multiplayer console game. This is more stuff I just don't care about.

Fair enough, but then the next thing I want to know is, how does it differentiate the two? If the followers and friends are in separate lists, then for MP do you need to go between the two? IMO I don't want two lists to browse when looking to play online with someone.

 

If it is one list then do you just get less info etc? I think its one of those features I won't appreciate till I see it. I just don't fully get why I would want to differentiate and how it does actually do that visually and functionally.

It might be one list but you only get the full options with friends while people you follow will just show up with basic info, like, they just started playing a game and so on.  I suppose, or rather expect, it'd be like basic status updates but not the full friend messaging and so on stuff.   You could probably even be able to post a update to your followers and have them join in a MP game etc.    We'll see how it turns out.
