Andre S. Veteran Posted September 25, 2013 Veteran Share Posted September 25, 2013 New lineup announced with new naming scheme and nice looking reference heatsinks. R9 is enthusiast gaming and R7 should be value. Prices seem low for the performance claimed. Looks sweet. R9 290X: fastest AMD GPU yet, 6 billion transistors, 5 TFLOPS, 4 billion triangles per second. Should obsolete the GTX Titan at least at current price points. Pupik
Why they didn't show the price tag for the R9 290x? edit: Their virtual surround sounds like a good idea, with support for the directional input from the games. Going to be interesting to test it out. IceBreakerG 1 Share

vcfan
based on the prices and firestrike numbers, it seems for the same performance of current cards, you will save $10-$30,but of course they will be more power efficient.
IceBreakerG
I'm really really hoping AMD prices the 290X (or even the 290) at $399, because if they do, this will be my next card (replacing my Radeon 4870). If they don't screw up on the price, then AMD just won this generation, at least until the Geforce 800 series launches.

Pupik
If the R9 290x goes for $499, I'm buying it on the first day just because of the TrueAudio feature. I'm impressed by this demo alone (the similar "barber shop" demo was less impressive to me): Going to be ****ing amazing to hear it being used in games. yxz
http://www.techpowerup.com/191453/amd-gpu14-event-detailed-announces-radeon-r9-290x.html Mantle and Graphics Core Next: Simplifying Cross-Platform Game Development The award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture in the AMD Radeon R9 and R7 Series graphics cards continues to serve as a driving force behind the Unified Gaming Strategy, AMD's approach to providing a consistent gaming experience on the PC, in the living room or over the cloud -- all powered by AMD Radeon graphics found in AMD graphics cards and accelerated processing units (APUs). The four pillars of the Unified Gaming Strategy -- console, cloud, content and client -- come together with the introduction of Mantle. With Mantle, games like DICE's "Battlefield 4" will be empowered with the ability to speak the native language of the Graphics Core Next architecture, presenting a deeper level of hardware optimization no other graphics card manufacturer can match. Mantle also assists game developers in bringing games to life on multiple platforms by leveraging the commonalities between GCN-powered PCs and consoles for a simple game development process. With the introduction of Mantle, AMD solidifies its position as the leading provider of fast and efficient game development platforms. Mantle will be detailed further at the AMD Developer Summit, APU13, taking place Nov. 11-13 in San Jose, Calif. http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle1.jpg http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle2.jpg http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle3.jpg http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle4.jpg http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle5.jpg http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle6.jpg http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-09-25/mantle7.jpg
Andre S. Veteran Posted September 26, 2013 Veteran Share Posted September 26, 2013 Whoooa, so much going on in the gaming landscape, these are exciting times. Frostbite 3 using Mantle will mean most EA games will run much better on AMD GPUs, the big question is what is NVIDIA going to do about it? Implementing an API designed for AMD's GCN architecture might not work for them at all. This would be bad news for SteamOS as well, since as things are shaping up it seems to be mainly in collaboration with NVIDIA. John Carmack has shared some thoughts on the matter: AMD has an interesting opportunity with Mantle because of their dual console wins, but I doubt Sony and MS will be very helpful. https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/383047595725037568 Considering the boost Mantle could give to a steambox, MS and Sony may wind up being downright hostile to it. Alwaysonacoffebreak
The R9 290X has been confirmed to cost 600$ While outmatching Titan I'd say that's not too bad. So far, it looks like AMD?s Hawaii GPUs are shaping up nicely. With performance that can only just unseat GTX Titan, though, it will entirely come down to pricing. Industry sources are pointing towards a $600 price point for the R9-290X, which would put it well below the GTX Titan?s $1,000 price tag, and cheaper even than the $650 GTX 780. http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/167309-radeon-r9-290x-hardware-specs-and-benchmarks-of-amds-titan-killer-leaked Also in a Forbes interview with AMD they said they won't price any single gpu card anywhere near the 1k mark. I'm guessing now we can see some more Nvidia "hate" PR statements towards new gen consoles since their top of the line was just pushed off the throne for 400 bucks cheaper. Alwaysonacoffebreak
next thing you would know they would phased out/kill Titan GTX and release 790 (dual Card) that and/or slashing price 770----> 300/350$ 780 GTX ---> 500$ Titan ---> 600/650$ or at least i would wish :p They won't slash Titan to 600, best they'll do is 699 or 799 even. Also like you said 790 would be a dual card. 290x is a single card, or at least as I have understand it so far, so the 790 will have an huge price tag from the start again. But we also need to keep in mind, Titan is an ultra-enthusiast card while the 290x is an enthusiast card, there just aren't too many people who will give out a grand for a gfx. Pupik - No one has confirmed it but this is straight from Forbes They?re coming in Q4. I can?t reveal a pricepoint but we?re looking at more traditional enthusiast GPU pricepoints. We?re not targeting a $999 single GPU solution like our competition because we believe not a lot of people have that $999. We normally address what we call the ultra-enthusiast segment with a dual-GPU offering like the 7990. So this next-generation line is targeting more of the enthusiast market versus the ultra-enthusiast one. ?It?s also extremely efficient. [Nvidia's Kepler] GK110 is nearly 30% bigger from a die size point of view. We believe we have the best performance for the die size for the enthusiast GPU. ?Another thing I can tell you is about the process node: this GPU is in 28nm. Some have speculated that it was 20nm and it?s not for a specific reason: At 28nm for an enthusiast GPU, we can achieve higher clock speeds and higher absolute performance.? Pupik
Pupik - No one has confirmed it but this is straight from Forbes How is that hints towards $600 price tag? The jump from 299 USD is just way too high and doesn't make a lot of sense. R7 250, 260X, R9 270X, 280X, 290X R7 250 1GB GDDR5, $89 R7 260X 2GB GDDR5, $139 R9 270X 2GB GDDR5, $199 R9 280X 3GB GDDR5, $299 R9 290X 4GB GDDR5... $600? from here http://videocardz.com/46006/amd-radeon-r9-290x-specifications-confirmed-costs-600 So price wasn't confirmed (notice the period). Still a hope for a better price.
Alwaysonacoffebreak
299 isn't an enthusiast card. Those cards easily start off from 599 when they come out. 299 are mid-high range cards. Also 290x is in 4GB and 6GB variants. Maybe the 600 is for the 6GB which wouldn't be too surprising since GDDR memory ain't actually cheap. When 7970 launched it went for $550 and that was for 3GB card, now 599 doesn't seem so weird for a 6GB card.
