iOS 7 looks better on screen then on hand

I really like the look of iOS 7 when they show it off Macworld but when you see it in person, I had a different thought about it. It looks like a toy phone now. Anyone had that same thought?

It's alright. Reminds me of Metro/ModernUI. I basically like it. I think it's an improvement. Just not a whole lot to it on the surface other than flatness and more minimalist which is the trend.

It's the flatness.

If you merely rely on appearances in Xcode (as I did before today), iOS 7 on non-Retina displays looks so flat that it's nearly lifeless; the flatness is actually MORE obvious in person (I saw an iPhone 4 running iOS 7 GM today in person - the iPhone 4 does NOT have a Retina display by default).  Does the iPhone 5c have a Retina display, even as an option?  What is the standard display of the 5s?  That's going to be the REAL measure of iOS 7 acceptance on new iDevices - sales on the less-expensive non-Retina hardware.  And I mention the nearly-lifeless aspect  is compared to previous versions of iOS, and specifically iOS 6.

What? Every iPhone since the 4 has had a Retina Display. The only non retina devices to support iOS 7 are ipad 2 and mini.....

Fairly sure the iPhone 4 has a retina display.

Can someone show me a pic of what's so different? The pic I saw looked very similar to the 5.1.1 version i'm using now. How is using it so different, don't you still just swipe and click on icons?

I'm not seeing the difference. I see some icons that are shaped like before. click n play. They added some features. Everyone else is acting like this is the difference between the Vista start menu and the Metro full screen UI. That's what i'm asking about...whats the complaint? Does it not feel right, does the UI flip upside down and come at you in 3d or what?

Kind of an odd thing to hate, how icons look. Functionality is king, who cares what good functionality looks like. I'd hope people don't just sit there and stare at icons as if it was a painting or something but whatever floats your boat. Good thing they didn't make giant tabs like MS then, that hate would turn to violent rages and suicides.

Now that I think about it, I don't recall anyone talking about how bad their desktop icons looked, some of the 3rd party ones especially over the years, How about PDA icons, it was like no one noticed, slap some slight alterations of existing ones on a modern phone and now all of a sudden it's a big deal. I think the hatred is a little misguided to say the least.

You're right. It is the flatness of the OS that gives it the 'toy' kinda look.

And wait what do you mean by no real retina display, doesn't the iPhone 4 come with a marketed Retina display?

Also, I want to agree with you but can you be a little more specific on what the real measure of iOS7 is? Why would the sales on the less expensive non Retina hardware be a measure of success for iOS 7? Is it because the iPhone 5C will enter a new market for Apple?

I actually like the look and feel of iOS 7 much more than previous versions. But I have always liked "flat" design: I also like the look of Win8. I have never been a big fan of skeuomorphism. In small amounts, it's alright, but iOS went overboard.

I prefer the win 8 look and the blue holo theme in android 4.2.1. The black and blue are pretty.

One word: Pastel

My brother's 14yo daughter LOVES iOS7.  Problem is.. I'm a 31yo heterosexual guy, I use my phone for work.

I'll stick to this

Gladly, OS X is still a beautiful and very efficient OS. I'm in love with my Retina Macbook Pro.

For me it was exactly the opposite. Hated it when it was first presented, but now that I've seen (and used) it in person, I actually like it a lot. Of course it's only been a week (for me), so that might still change. I'm possibly still in the 'honeymoon' period. The apps themselves are very elegant and restrained in their design. I feared the design would be much less usable due to the removal of visual hints / affordances, but so far that's not been my experience, although someone new to the platform might have a little more trouble, I don't know... As for the icons, you just have to combine them with a simple dark background to get rid of the 'bubble gum' effect. The iTunes Store icon gradient still looks very strange to me, the rest of the icons in their current state I've gotten used to. Plus, somehow they seem less bright on the iPhone's screen than they did in screenshots, probably due to different color temperatures or something
