Trazodone altering mind into violent?

Recommended Posts

I just recently forwarded a link from my friend,

In that link it said that Trazodone which prescribed as anti-depressant are having side effect to make its users more violent.

http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2013/09/20/324976/navy-yard-shooter-was-on-trazodone/

Several murder cases over the past few years have been directly connected to Trazodone.

  • Eight people were killed and one wounded during a mass shooting at a beauty parlor in Seal Beach, California in 2011. The killer, Scott Evan Dekraai, was on Desyrel, a commercial variant of Trazodone.
  • In 2009, Perley Goodrich Jr. beat his mother and then shot his father dead shortly after being injected with Trazodone in a psychiatric hospital. Goodrich had complained that he didn?t want to take the medication because it made him feel violent.
  • In 2009, Steven Foster shot a gas station attendant in the head before shooting him a second time. Bottles of Trazodone pills were later found in Foster?s room.
  • Marine Lance Cpl. Delano Holmes fatally stabbed an Iraqi soldier to death in 2007 after military doctors prescribed him Trazodone.
  • Indiana soldier Pfc. David Lawrence was taking Trazodone in combination with Zoloft when he killed a Taliban commander in a prison cell in 2010. Lawrence was charged with premeditated murder. According to the FDA, taking these drugs in combination can cause ?altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations and coma.?

though naysayers claim the drug is safe.

No drug is perfectly safe. Different drugs have different effects on different people. That said, we know this one is unsafe in some people. I think they should pull it and do some more testing on it.

Most of these "antidepressants" do more bad than good. Doctors write them all day long, not even know how they work..

That's not true. My mother suffers from depression and they make a huge difference, despite the side-effects. They don't eliminate depression but they do make it less extreme.

How is it possible to imprison someone when they were prescribed something like this?? Sure they kill someone, but how can it be their fault if their mind was altered by the drugs??

I said MOST

They do a lot of good for people that their bodies react well to the treatment..

If not, it can be a horrible situation..

Back when I first started having my heart issues, they put me on buspar to keep my calm.. It was four weeks of pure hell letting my body get "adjusted" to it.. Throwing up, insomnia, random aches and pains.. This is not your body getting adjusted, this is your body telling to stop putting this poison in your body. Coming off Buspar was just as worse as taking it. You get the "brain zaps", fatigue, along with insomnia. Horrible medicine.

A few years back when I wanted to get my back better, they put me on Cymbalta for chronic pain.. Doctors will even tell you that they don't even know how it works, that it just does.. This was a horrible horrible experience.  Heart felt like it was beating out of my chest, insomnia, fatigue..

It isn't that it is just me.. I did a lot of research in these prescriptions.. there TONS of people that have horrible stories, a lot worse than mine about antidepressants. I know everyone is different, but there are tons of people that are on them that shouldn't be.

I have a family member that is on effexor... Totally changed him.. He fell into marriage that he normally would not have gotten himself into if he was not taking it. (There are actually lot of stories about people getting married while on effexor and coming divorced when they wake the hell up from the zombie trip). He is easily to be controlled now on it, he is always down and pretty much just depressing to be around.. He is not the same person at all..

The flipside, they have also done a lot of good for people that actually need them and their bodies react well from them. However, the goal is to eventually to come off of them, however doctors will keep you on them forever..

Antidepressants are prescribed like candy because of 2 reasons:

1) It's an obvious choice

2) They doctors get MASSIVE kickbacks for prescribing them

Moreover, they are often prescribed and mismanaged.  They CAN be of use, but alongside counselling and therapy - on their own, they can reduce the symptoms but in the end they solve nothing.

I don't dispute that they are over prescribed and in some cases are more harmful than the symptoms they are designed to tackle but I think it's a major stretch to say that most are detrimental to people's health and that doctors don't know how they work. Given the degree to which they are used you will of course find thousands or even tens of thousands of people that experience issues but that's a fraction of the millions of people receiving them.

PS - I am speaking from a UK perspective. I'm aware that there are some issues specific to the US with regards to financial incentives for prescribing drugs.

Do you have any statistics to show this?

fair enough.. US has a rampant problem with getting kickbacks from pharmaceuticals..

My main point is, if someone is on them, they need to be closely monitored like they need to be if on heavy pain medication. For example, regular physicians shouldn't be able to write them.. Only a licensed psychiatrist..  For long term use of narcotics, they refer you to a pain clinic, wouldn't be a bad idea to model that for antidepressants.

I would also say that more people have bad experiences with antidepressants than any other type of drug out there.

I don't have a problem with antidepressants being prescribed by GPs, as it will be done under guidelines from psychiatric experts and medical boards. In the UK they are often prescribed in addition to counselling. Of course it's better to have more direct access with experts but there are costs involved and it might not be necessary.

Probably, but that's more a statement of how many people are taking them rather than an inherent problem. The side effects are carefully considered when prescribing. Obviously there is a need for better treatment but drugs and behavioural therapy techniques are being constantly improved.

I'm on Trazodone and I don't have any violent urges.

So the medication is the same but what about health, history with relatives, environmental stressors? Given this is just a minority of people that take the medication, people shouldn't rush to bad mouth this drug.

All that is true. And the same drug affects people very differently. One uncle has to take one kind of blood pressure pill but his brother has to take another kind because he can't tolerate the first.

That's unfair. Brain chemistry is very volatile, most of the times there is no way to know how one patient would react. I took several kinds of ADs until my doctor discovered the one that actually helps me.

I had this discussion in later post in this thread about this. Maybe that generalization was a bit unfair.. Doctors in my state must just be a lot different than others.. They don't care about their patients and will just write anything without thinking twice.

A good doctor will monitor you and do weekly follow-ups for the first 3 months, helping you through getting adjusted..  I understand that some people can not help to be depressed due to brain chemistry (their brain not mixing the right chemicals together) and have to have medication. I understand this, but at the same time, they should be closly monitored until a good solution is found.

I guess I have just had horrible experiences with them, see how bad they have changed my brother, so therefore I'm really cautious about them

That's right. There are good and bad doctors everywhere. Even the bad doctors who do not have license or fake license..

All you do is research about the doctors and see if they are good.. if so, call him/her up and be your doctor. Otherwise if they are not good, avoid them.

Trazodone is used most often to help a person sleep. More then likely these people from these articles were on a list of various medications that need to be taken at specific times throughout the day. If there is an abrupt change in in the schedule of these medications I could see this happening with severe psychiatric patients. Unless you heard from the psychiatrists that were under their care that were prescribing the medications these articles are just speculation.

  • 1 year later...

The problem isn't that these drugs do not work to treat depression, the real problem is that it can be extremely hard to separate depression from life events and clinical depression which happens even if everything is going well. It can be easy to say antidepressants don't work when they are given to someone who suffered a legitimate reason to feel depressed and was improperly diagnosed with clinical depression and then it doesn't work properly causing side effects. There is a trend to give antidepressants to combat depression that has a rational and real cause as a way to help the person cope quicker and more efficiently. This is where the failure happens because the brain will either try to stabilize itself and be unable to since the medication is interfering, or its natural abilities to control emotions can become depressed making them extremely addictive. Proper diagnosing is the only way out of the mess and far too often doctor's want that insurance or medicaid reimbursement and prescribe these drugs inappropriately.
