JENKINTOWN, PA Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania couple said they are fighting a littering citation from the city of Philadelphia stemming from a catalog bearing their address.

Jerry and Barbara Cohen of Jenkintown said they were baffled by the $150 littering citation they received in the mail from the city of Philadelphia in May and assumed it must have been a mistake because they hadn't been to the city in months, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.

Cohen said he called the city to complain when a second notice arrived in September with a $40 late penalty.

Officials told Cohen that city workers found five trash bags abandoned at a city intersection and a Tuesday Morning catalog bearing his wife's name and address was discovered in one of the bags.

Items bearing the names and addresses of three other people were also discovered in the bags and those people were also cited, officials said.

"It's the most unbelievable thing I've heard in my life," Cohen said. "They are closing down schools, and this is what they are spending their resources on?"

Cohen said the catalog may have been taken from the main recycling bin in the building by someone who later threw it out with the other trash.

He said he will appeal the citation.

"The city is in dire straits, but they sure aren't getting my money," he said.

Yep. Unbelievable, isn't it? I once had someone come by and steal a bag of my garbage as it sit by the roadside waiting to be picked up. They found it later in the park, my name scattered on pieces all about. Now I shred everything piece before I put in it the garbage.

Shredding is the way to go.  I shred my stuff too.  But shredding a whole magazine?  What. A. Pain.  lol.

Man that sucks. Surely the city should take back this ticket!

Or you could just shred the part with your name on it ;)

Same thing happens here in the UK, if you name is found in rubbish that has been fly tipped then you have to pay the fine even if you did not put it there. It is because "builders" don't like to pay to throw the waste away so just dump it and your responsible for them, so you are punished for not going with a "reputable" builder. :/

They should go after McDonald's if there was a Take-out bag in there. Clearly they did it.
