World's most expensive car -- Ferrari 250 GTO

Recommended Posts

In February 2012, a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO became the most expensive car ever sold, fetching a staggering $32 million. Then, just a few months later, a 1962 GTO, built for the legendary Sir Stirling Moss, eclipsed that record selling for $35 million. But in the world of Ferraris, GTOs, and incredibly affluent, unidentified buyers, a $35 million GTO is now a relative steal. That's because a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO has just sold for $52 million according to Bloomberg, snatching the record as the latest "most expensive car ever sold."

With just 39 in existence, the 250 GTO still boasts incredible rarity. And its racing heritage, built to compete in the Le Mans 24-Hours, combined with its timeless good looks, makes the GTO hold unprecedented allure amongst investors. Adding to the mania, private sales tend to fetch more than public auctions.

But the 250 GTO has become somewhat of a status symbol, being deemed an item that defines a collection ? and hence defines the owner. The latest record-breaking GTO, bearing chassis number 5111, won the 1963 Tour de France road race with Jean Guichet at the helm, and was owned by American collector Paul Pappalardo.

I saw this a couple days ago. I don't see the hype for the Ferrari 250 GTO (let alone any other Ferrari).

the GTO is really a nice looking car...for me the best looking Ferrari is the F40: timeless design, bold and simply stuning! And the fact that i say a Le Mans edition when i was young, near a marina, at night, it was like heaven.

$52 million for one car -- someone needs their head examined.

This is what the world is coming too. The rich just keeps getting richer and this type of behavior is what's it's all about for them.

A coworker of mine back in the 70's.had a 365 GTB/4 Daytona - 190mph without breathing hard. We had a ton of fun with it back in those days. Of course then you could get a Porsche 911 or Ferrari 246 Dino for <$15k.

No wonder it costs so much. That's a very exclusive club.

There are cars out there in less volume, and cost WAY less. It's just overvalued.

Maybe it is overvalued but the value keeps increasing so it seems like a good investment.

Are you serious? I wouldn't take that ugly piece of crap for free. :s

Yes you would, if for no other reason than to sell it and retire.

Lamborghini and Ferrari are nice cars but expensive on repairs.. Unless you can repair it to save the labor costs.

Porsche is cheaper.

I rode in a 911 a long time ago... It is a nice car.  Can't remember what year it was... I think around '80.

And I rode in a Ferrari (Magnum PI version) once... nice ride.

So you are saying that a very famous paint is overpriced because there are now more in volume and cost less? This is art and a very exclusive one.

top gear once tried to test a GTO but couldn't because the insurance was freaking high.
