new ps3 owner, game advice?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to game store to buy a game for the weekend, can anybody recommend me one? Don't have to be new.

I prefer RPG and Action over other genres. Like Dragon Age and GTA V.

Get a PS+ Subscription if they are available in Chili, its worth it.

Also as far as games what genre are you interested in.

Grand Theft Auto V

Infamous

Assassins Creed

The Last of US

Tomb Raider

BioShock

Plenty of games out there all over the place genre wise.

PS+ is your best friend.  You don't have to have it to play the PS3 online, but you get free games every month, and it's only $50 a year.  Right now "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" is free for PS+ subscribers, so just that alone not counting the other free stuff I haven't noticed yet more than pays for the $50 a year fee, and that's just the stuff that's free this month.

Anyway, in no particular order, here's a few games that I've played and loved that fall in the action or RPG genres:

God of War 3

Dante's Inferno

Darksiders
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Stealth combat like the older MGS games, but I consider it action because you won't instantly die if you choose to engage enemy troops, you can actually firefight and survive)

Mass Effect (The whole series)

Killzone 2 and 3 (I hear they've HDified the first one and released it on PS3, but I've only played it on PS2 and it was painful to say the least, they tried to do too much on that limited hardware and the game suffered)

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Assassins Creed double packs (E.g. Assassins Creed & Assassins Creed II)

Assassins Creed 3

Batman Arkham City / Arkham Asylum

Metal Gear Solid 4

Darksiders / Darksiders II

God Of War III / God Of War Ascension

All of which you should be able to get on the cheap from internet retailers / ebay.

Kingdom's of Alumar deserves a mention as well. I'm so far preferring it over Skyrim.

AC games are on sale I believe as well.  Get the Ezio Trilogy at least.

Uncharted 2

Uncharted 3 (single-player is free with PS+)

God of War Origins & III

MGS4

inFamous 1 & 2

Lair

GTA V

Look up some of the HD Classics -- Ico Collection, Sly Collection, Jak & Daxter Collection, etc.  2-3 games each for cheaper than one new game.

There is nothing better then Uncharted 2 and 3.   1 was ok but is is only for a fan.   Starting with 2 is great.   Their newest title The last of Us have being praised very highly, and having played the first 2 hours, I can see why.

Still, I love the spirit behind Uncharted. It is better then Indiana Jones movie to watch, and also YOU ARE PLAYING. Action galore.  Not so much RPG..... sorry.

God of War 3 (have not played the lastest one) and you can skip the 1&2.  They were good at a time, but outdated.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is amazing... but as a person who have not played MGS since first game on PS1... it takes a while to get into.   Once you do, it is amazing.

INfamous 2 as well...

This games define PS3 for me. You cannot descrine a PS3 gaming without playing this games!!!!

ps. Arkham Asylum was very good and i happend to play on ps3... but it is not necessary a ps3 game.

I was thinking on playing the sagas (Uncharted, GoW, etc.), but for many commentary i can read here i think there is not worth playing the first ones.

To play the Uncharted 2 or 3, i have to play the first one for understand the history?

There may be occasional references to the previous games but nothing where you'd be completely lost having not playing them.  The originals are still good games, but they're not something you absolutely have to play and would recommend say UC2 or UC3 over the first if you don't have time for them all.  One thing I will say is that if you're going to play them, I generally recommend playing them in order. There's certain things that get added to the game play that can get frustrating to play without (major one being that you can't throw back grenades in UC1, you have to run away from them....so annoying at times).

I'd play the uncharteds in order. Not so much for the sake of story comprehension but to see how Naughty Dog progressed with the development on the PS3 system.

Yes, the series definitely came into it's own with Uncharted 2, but 1 is still a damn good game, and I think playing the entire series makes one appreciate it that much more.

So with that said...

PS3 Games

  • Uncharted 1, 2 & 3*
  • The Last Of Us
  • GTA V for sure.
  • Infamous 1 & 2 absolutely.
  • Ico *
  • God Of War 3
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Demons Souls
  • Little Big Planet 2

And if you are feeling like getting out of your preferred genres, I do think checking out the following is worth it..

  • Killzone 2
  • Killzone 3
  • Gran Turismo 5

If you are into the idea of not just playing traditional games, I think you should check out...

  • Heavy Rain
  • Journey (I say this is pretty much a must play game)
  • The Unfinished Swan

PSN "arcade" style games,

  • Pixel Junk Shooter 1&2
  • Pixel Junk Eden
  • Hotline Miami
  • Spelunky
  • Rain
  • Super Stardust HD
  • Wipeout HD
  • The Last Guy
  • Bit Trip Runner 2*

Finally as mentioned, please if you can, absolutely get PS+. Such a great service overall. As pointed out, right away you will get Uncharted 3 "for free" with it!

Only reason I felt the need to put for free in quotes is people like to point out it is just a rental, which is true, which is also true of all other subscription based services out there.

Here is information on +.

It is truly a fantastic system. In fact even though at the beginning of this generation, I used the XBox 360 way more, when all is said and done, I have almost exclusively just used the PS3 the past 2 years, if not longer. Enough for me to purchase a second one for my bedroom. Enjoy. (Y)

Gerowen said it. Amalur is an amazing game,so make sure to get Plus if you haven't. There are tons of good games, Larry covered many above, and many were mentioned before, tho I think no one said Resistance. Love this franchise. For some reason it's the forgotten Sony exclusive. At least play 3, truly great shooter.

I'm playing Uncharted 1 right now. It is very fun so far that i'm planning on finish the series and to get the plus subscription.
I have King of Amalur on my Origin PC account, but i guess playing it on the PS3 will serve to my purpose to get accustomed to the PS3 controller.
It is so bad KillZone is a PS3 exclusive because i'm leaving the FPS games to my Beloved PC, i still prefer the mouse and keyboard for them.
Thanks everybody for their advice.

And again, sorry about my english...

I too almost exclusively prefer to play FPS's on the PC because of a keyboard and mouse, but with that said, you should strongly consider checking out Killzone.

The main reason is since it is a PS3 exclusive, the controls are absolutely built from the ground up with a controller in mind. As such, the controller works perfect for playing the game itself.

Just something to consider.

Also, may I suggest picking up Real Triggers somewhere.

They add a "trigger" to the dualshock controller, and really do make it better, especially for FPS's.

And they are only around $5.

I was thinking in NI NO KUNI too. Is there one of the "Tales of" which i should start

tales of xillia, the one that just came out a couple months ago is pretty good

it seems to be one of the easier of the series so it'd be a good starting point if you want to start easier

the other 2 that i know personally are Tales of Graces F and Tales of Vesperia. both good as well (if you can for Graces get the F version as it has an extra post main game story line that's really good and wraps things up for the characters)

no need to apologize for anything Juan, this is a friendly place and there's nothing wrong with your writing. also don't listen to Larry, he's somewhat of a snob when it comes to FPSs

try to get into shooters on consoles man, they're awesome. for myself I really do prefer a controller over keyboard and mouse, I even do COD and BF on PC with my Xbox controller heh heh. And I prove that it's not a disadvantage. I definitely don't rule, but I don't get destroyed more than I do with a keyboard and mouse.

So, give it a go. I used to be anti-shooter on console myself until the original Killzone and BLACK finally sold me on it being not only possible, but preferable (except for the better visuals on PC, of course, which will never change).

Yeah you absolutely should.

Hey, I have played all the COD's released in the past 5 or so years on a console as well. Also the first Bioshock*. So not a snob, I just know which platform is ultimately better.  In all fairness too, it is not always a matter of preferring the keyboard and mouse, although that does play a HUGE factor in it. The graphics are just insanely better on PC as well. For example Crysis 3 from the consoles to a PC. Just no comparison. PC just poo poos on the console versions in every and all regards, especially with a game like it. So there is also that. I have a PC for gaming, and from time to time I try to use it. Truth is I actually do 90% of gaming on consoles these days, and that will just keep climbing until I build a new PC, as it is starting to show it's age.

But I will no doubt play an FPS on the console from time to time. Especially when it is an exclusive (like Killzone or Halo), and also if and when being in my home theater just really amps up the experience (such as the original Bioshock, having it in 6.1 surround sound was just amazing in all regards) and finally just when my friends tend to be playing only the console version (COD), although I do make some exceptions and just say screw my friends, such as with Battlefield. Although I am probably going to double dip on it and pick it up for the consoles as well, PC is no doubt my preferred platform for it, just from a historical experience.

So not really a snob, although I realize it can come off as such. However I prefer the term "purist."  ;)

I actually have another game to add to the list since I just started checking the latter out and have played the former...

Heavy Rain and/or Beyond: Two Souls

Now I recommend those games with a HUGE asterisk, as they are not traditional games by any stretch of the imagination. However I think they need to exist in the medium, as even with their obvious flaws, and there are no doubt flaws, they still attempt to do something honorable and different, and I believe they should be supported and experienced to push games even further.
