Subscriber² Posted October 4, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted October 4, 2013 Origin PC drops AMD graphics options due to feedback, support woes Many gaming PC builders stock both AMD and NVIDIA video hardware to guarantee that they always have the fastest graphics. Not Origin PC, however -- it has had enough trouble with AMD that it's dropping all Radeon GPUs from its lineup. The company tells Engadget that it's responding to "customer experiences," support team demands and problems with both performance and stability. While there are still plenty of vendors that carry Radeon graphics, Origin PC's move is a blow to AMD's image; it suggests that the chip designer needs more than just advanced silicon to please gamers. I could think up many reasons (and also quote customer experience and support issues*) why I don't jump for Radeon, currently real freaking cheap GTX 760 takes the top spot of those, but dropping them altogether? That's as fishy as fish can get. * mostly many 7850/7870 going black screen, but that wasn't even AMD's own problem. And they've fixed it a great while ago. Arceles Posted October 5, 2013 Share Posted October 5, 2013 Well, after all the good news from AMD somebody thinks it needs some balance, particularly, I've used ATi cards since the rage lt pro, while indeed there have been problems, none of them has been really frustrating for me (and to be fair, nvidia isn't exactly perfect either, but I do admit they have most of the time better drivers) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Phouchg Posted October 5, 2013 Share Posted October 5, 2013 The thing with problems people have with devices such as graphics cards or motherboards or anything related is that people tend to generalize - my Geforce/Radeon doesn't work or whatever, so all Geforces/Radeons ever made must be crap. Or better yet - I've only used that or that since Ghandi was born and they've never failed me. It's very rare when either is true. And this is very much the case here. NightScreams Posted October 5, 2013 Share Posted October 5, 2013 I think they need to really focus on drivers. I bet no such issues will be present with the PS4 and Xbone consoles which use AMD. There certainly is some bias from hardware makers and even software devs when it comes to PC vs other hardware. If AMD had glaring issues with their video cards, then it would be news. One company dropping support for AMD's GPUs doesn't mean their hardware and software is bad. Also, AMD's acquisition of ATI was a smart decision. AMD hardware powers both next-gen consoles as well as the Xbox 360 and Wii. Care to say why you think AMD was dumb? spaceelf Posted October 7, 2013 Share Posted October 7, 2013 My 4850 and 6870 were great until the bearings went wack on the 6870s fan. When gaming it hurt my ears o.o I just went to a 660 before the 760 came out :pinch: and then they announced Mantle :pinch: I should've suspected they had something up their sleeve, I suppose, but it sure didn't seem like it. I've been an Nvidia user almost exclusively since I started building PCs 10+ years ago.. That changed when a Radeon card popped up with good value at a time I was interested in buying (XFX 7870 with Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider last year for ~$200), and I've had no issues that a little research/know-how couldn't take care of. It's not what Origin did, it's WHY they did it. Origin is meaningless in the big scheme of things, but Nvidia is not and they're doing shady things behind closed doors. I'm sure that if Nvidia released something like Mantle, it would have been an exclusive. I hope someone smacks them with a lawsuit, because this crap needs to stop.
