Curious situation with win8

well finally succumbed and upgraded to windows 8!!!....I was running Vista and it was running like a pig (does not help I like to try things and probably made Vista crap itself:)) and had a chance at a free legit copy of win8 so I took it....I have 2 hard drives in my machine, C and D.  D is my backup drive to save stuff.  SO I saved stuff from Vista that I could not replace to my D drive from Vista and I do I a clean install of win 8.  Install goes great and reboots no problems till I notice I can not get into my D drive...Win 8 saw the drive and disk management saw the drive but neither would let me in to my backup data till I figured out I had to change the permissions of the drive to 'full control' in order to access it and it worked.

 

Now I have access to that data by my questions are:

 

        In a future update say 8.1 will this happen again?

        And are there any other weird things about 8 I should be on the look out for?

That shouldn't have happened in the first place but that wont happen again with an upgrade to 8.1 as all your stuff will be the same. You did a clean install of Windows 8 which prolly meant you didn't have the same UDID which is how security works to match you to your data.

 

In any case, welcome... wtf took you so long? Vista? Man... I liked it too but got rid of it as soon as Windows 7 was available (even in BETA). :P

The permissions on that drive were given to a user that doesn't exist anymore. (Doesn't matter if it's the same name.) Once you take ownership again it should be fine. An upgrade will keep security intact, a full install will not.

Exactly. I had the same issue when I got a new computer and swapped my data drive to it. Once I sorted out permissions, I had no problems.

mmmm..after seeing and understanding what has been said about security, I hooked my external drive which I used as a another backup when I had vista and win 8 had no problems it only had a problem with my internal drive...which is an old 320gb seagate btw

this has happened to quite a few people I know. you did figure it out instead of panicking, so all's good, and I think you'll find Win 8 is an excellent OS. this will not happen with 8.1, basically guaranteed. Win 8 I suspect, and despite what MS folks will say, was not really optimized for upgrading from Vista.

I always do a full install and never an upgrade install, while it makes migration harder it means there is less pain overall

Not the best of reasons, Win7 was better for gaming, 8/8.1 are better than 7 for gaming
