psionicinversion Posted October 8, 2013 Share Posted October 8, 2013 the R9 280x's and below are out and available to buy at really competitive price points, was going go buy one today but might hold off for the sapphire toxics or see how much the 290 goes for seeing as its cheaper than what i thought theyd start out. I was just about to buy a 7870, should i get the R9 270X instead? same card just re-badged and slightly over clocked? Yeah. It'll be cheaper. EDIT: I'm mistaken. It won't be cheaper. What AMD has to beat (at both the same price points AND the same power-consumption points) - nVidia GTX660/760. Why do I say that, despite having a GTX550 Ti today? Simple - right now, when it's GPU upgrade time, the two nV GPUs I named are my upgrade targets; more importantly, only the GTX760 would force a power-supply upgrade. I don't have anything against AMD - this particular GTX550 Ti was a refurb, and replaced the AMD HD5450 iSilence (VIsiontek) due to being silly-cheap. However, I tend to stick to the same brand of hardware unless major muckups force me not to - in that sense, the purchase of my current GPU is an outlier. However, since the refurb nV GPU has held up, and I haven't exactly been nice to it, it would take something major in terms of bang for buck for me to consider an AMD GPU at this time. AMD should have added TrueAudio support to all of their new video cards. With the way they're doing it now, it'll be worse than PhysX. If that was the case, you shouldn't, because the R9 280x is meant to compete against the GTX 770; which it by the way crushes in benchmarks. The R9 290x with the new Big Kahuna chipset is supposed to compete against the GTX 780. Let's wait until the 15th to see if it can outperform the 780 in price and performance. The 280X is cheaper (and slightly slower), the 270X is 20$ more expensive(!) and the 260X has the same price (+TrueAudio which is not used in anything for now). I understand getting the 290 and 290X now for TrueAudio, but the 260X is not a card I'd get for that feature right now. I wouldn't say the 280x "crushes" the 770. They're pretty much even, which is expected since the 7970GHz was also about the same. The main difference is the price. The 280x is about $100US/?80 cheaper than the 770, so there's no reason to buy a 770 at this time. I highly suspect that the 770 is going to crash in price very soon though, and a "770+" will take it's place. This is basically what happened to the 9800GTX when the HD4000 series came out.
