Nokia lumina 520, 625 or "525"

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I used to have a Nokia lumina 610. Had a love hate relationship with it (mostly because it was slow). I loved its battery life however.

Question is; should I go with a Nokia lumina 520, Nokia lumina 625 (upper limit on my budget of $300), or wait for the rumored 525?

HTC 8S isn't a choice as virgin has pulled it.

I only have a budget of $300 but preferably $150.

Battery life is huge for me. Apps I am aware there isn't many. Camera...rarely use. Front facing camera is irrelevant (never actually used it on my phone). I mostly listen to music and browse the web, so speed is helpful.

I researched the 520 and it seems ok. Screen isn't the best but 610 was the same.

Phone must be Koodo/Telus compatible hence those 3 choices.

Well, I have a 521 (basically the same as the 520, without the international stuff) and it works great. I can tell you the screen is hard to read during the daylight, and the battery life is good depending on what you use it for. What are your needs as in a GPS, Gaming Device, Light Internet Browsing? It is a good GPS and browsing is smooth so is basic apps. Nokia Smart Cam, Panorama, and other Nokia Camera apps are mostly on their, except the Pro Cam app, but you said you don't use it for the camera.

What about screen size (big, small, don't care?) that is basically the huge deciding factor between the 625 and the 520. Battery life is also greater on the 625.

The 625 also has these in addition to what the 520/521 have:

  • Gorilla Glass
  • Wide viewing angle
  • Sunlight readability enhancements
  • LED Flash
  • 1080P Video

The 520/521 does have creative studio and lumia color profile although the website doesn't list that.

that's not true. there are almost 200K apps.

No scotiabank or cineplex or Waze (yea good luck with that one...). And the Canadian store has a lot less.

The 4.5 screen is good size for me 4.7 doesn't seem like over kill. 625 seems better...as well gyroscope amd equalizer. The 610 was very poor in the sun but so is my S2!

Not sure what you can get the 520 for in Canada, but here in the States, I got my 520 for $99 at a GoPhone. I love the phone. I'm coning from a HTC One X, and the lower resolution screen and poorer camera don't concern me much. Windows Phone 8 compensates for a lot of the hardware deficiencies.

We'll know about the 525 in a bit so I'd wait at least until the 22nd to find out what the new stuff is.  I have a feeling the 525 will come with GDR3 already though, i'd hope so anyways.  This should be worth a bit of a wait.

I'd go the 625, same chip as in the 920, screen looks like ass for the first week or so, but then it seems to settle.

It's a little pixely, but not bad at all.

Interchangeable covers and in general quite awesome. Set up 3 of my friends with them.

Yeah, since Nokia have an event on the 22nd, it might be worth waiting (even though it's likely a tablet, but still) just to see what comes of it.

If possible, I would suggest going for the upper end of your budget if it is feasibly possible to do so without causing you financial issues. You'll find the handset will last you longer and you'll appreciate the extra bit of money you dropped on it. :)

To clarify, I would say the 625, unless the event on the 22nd brings anything new.

It's expected that they'll have new phones as well, like the 1520 plus the tablet and maybe 1 or 2 other phones as well.

Yeah, the emphasis is on the 1520 and the tablet, but it doesn't mean you should rule out the possibility of other handsets.

  • 2 weeks later...

Nokia will launch at least 6 phones and a tablet in the event. My suggestion-wait for what 525 has to offer and then decide

Huawei Ascend W1 is the only choice then.

That is a hard phone to get in Canada.

I purchased the Nokia Lumia 625. I didn't get it from a Telus store...as of the 7 stores in town that had one, only one did. And that store wouldn't let me buy it full price, so I got it on the website.

WIND will sell you one. It's where I got mine. Might be tough in Red Deer though, I'll admit.

Yea. If WIND was here trust me I'd fly over to them. But WIND says Red Deer won't be on there map. Ever.

Feel sorry. I was glad to ditch Bell gouging me $67 a month for less features than I get for $33 with WIND. (figures after tax)
