Desktop freezing

Windows 7 x64, Dell XPS 8300, Nvidia GT 530 (windows updated drivers). 

 

 

I'm having an issue on one of my desktops with the desktop freezing (multiple times a day but it BSOD twice). I cannot use the mouse or keyboard but if you have task mgr open, you can see the processes move and Pandora will continue to play (if it's open). You can put the computer to sleep and wake it up and it's fine. It's been scanned with multiple antivirus/mailware programs without finding anything.

 

Had the new Nvidia drivers on the system but removed those. I didn't do a clean uninstall of the old drivers. I'll do that when I have time today. All the software should all be up to date on the system.

None of the other XPS 8300's have an issue.

Use nvidia 312.44 WHQL driver, 320.xx series above are buggy.

If that is a Dell card use the Dell drivers. Dell does something with the firmware on the cards that can cause random issues with the card manufacturer drivers.

Done. Used drive sweeper and installed 314.07 (which was closest I could find) and that didn't help. Still froze up.

 

I loaded up WhoCrashed and it gave 2 unknown crashes (listed above) and one known crash from a piece of software. I have removed that software, so hopefully, things will be better. I hope.

This might sound crazy, but have you tested the memory? I have had that same driver give me BSOD's and in both instances, swapping out the RAM with new sticks cleared up the issue. It seems different given the way you described the problem... but maybe worth a try.

I haven't tried the memory yet. If it happens again, I'll swap it. I did swap the video card with another, just in case it was that. Thanks.

Looks like memory for sure. Run Memtest

Froze again. I'm going to change out the memory.

 

Memtest shows no errrors. Though, the computer I put the ram into had to restart Explorer as soon as I logged in.

Well, I believe it's the USB driver for the mouse and keyboard.

 

1) Took the hard drive and put it in another XPS 8300 and issues continued.

2) Switched out Keyboard/Mouse and issue continues.

 

Tried to update the USB driver, in the administrator account, but that didn't seem to help. I'm going to try to uninstall the keyboard and mouse and have them reinitialize.

Maybe delete the USB driver, and run windows update see if there is a newer one on there
