McDonald's Employee Detained for Confronting Company President

Recommended Posts

A lot of energy and knowledge to work at McDonalds?  Really?  I go home and I may my own burgers on the grill, I fry my own fries and pour my own soda.  I make my own deserts and and even clean up after myself.  It is not rocket science.

Seriously lady, try getting out there and working the jobs that do pay 15 or more an hour and then compare it to the knowledge you need to do your job.  And your job is not the only full time job out there either that people have to go to every day.  So your reasoning for $15 an hour is just plain silly.

You're clearly talking about something you have no idea about.

I can see both points. McDonalds is a low skill and high turn around job. But with that said, McDonalds should give somewhat of a living wage for their employees. No one wants to work for McDonalds for 10 years but also their employees should be about to live low middle lifestyle. Higher wages would be less turnaround and less time hiring and training new workers. There is always a both sword and McDonalds could save money by raising wages from 8.25 to atleast 11/hr.

I know my cousin pays his ex-gf something like 700 a month for their two children, but he does it on his own cognition and not a court order. So many asshats out there try to avoid paying and too many women don't take them to court to force them to (maybe they cannot afford the lawyer?).

Yeah many women don't and I have no idea why. If finances are an issue then there are public attorneys that will do it for free and also some lawyers may do it pro bono too.

But even with that some of them just refuse to do it and it never makes sense to me. Maybe it's pride?

Not knowledge maybe, but yes on energy.

Try doing your example 8 hours a day with people yelling at you and barking orders.

SO GET A BETTER JOB! Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage, and these people are just entitled **** bags who think everything should be handed to them, instead of them having to work to accomplish something.

Go get an education, do something that actually makes a difference to the world, instead of flipping burgers.

Everyone else knows that if they don't like what they're getting paid, they need to seek other employment or get more skills. Why is that these burger flipping ***** think they deserve as much as a skilled tradesperson?

There is a reason she never made it to manager (which has an income of significantly more money), and the reason is pretty obvious, even without knowing her.

Someone has to do these jobs. Calling them entitled **** bags who think everything should be handed to them just shows how ignorant you are. So tell me, tomorrow when everyone just quits McDonalds and goes and finds another job (if they even can), are you going to go and make your own burger at McDonalds?

I do think $15 is way too high for that kind of job though.

Blue collar usually gets screwed because the jobs they do are considered "disposable" and unskilled. It's not hard to find someone to be a cashier, a 10 year old could do it easily. It's a lot harder, costs more money, and takes far more effort to find someone to fit into a management role.

Mind you, not all blue collar jobs are disposable and unskilled. Trades like plumbers, builders here can often make very good money.

I think he was referring to them being entitles ###### bags for demanding $15/hr for McDonald's pay. He is correct on that count. Just working a low paying job does not make you an entitled ###### bag though.

Also if everyone quit McDonald's tomorrow, they could have a new staff hired and trained in about 3-4 hours, fast food truly is an unskilled job, you need to show up and be breathing, I think you might be overestimating how irreplaceable these people are.

Fair enough I should have been more specific and said retail / fast food.

I have years ago in high school.  Then I grew up, wanted something better and got a better paying job.

Again, like I mentioned before, we don't know this woman's situation.

It is likely the father is a deadbeat and/or walked out on them, forcing her to live on these wages.

Yes someone does. Flipping burgers at McDonalds is a learning experience, not a career path. The job is suited for people with low skillsets or an inability to succeed, and definitely not for supporting two kids, and yourself with.

Let me spell it out even clearer. If you think you deserve $15/hr for a job that doesn't even deserve minimum wage, you are an entitled ****. And what makes them think they're not total idiots for even ASKING for that much money?

PS: I don't eat at McDonalds, but yes, I do make my own burgers. And **** are they ever delicious. Success tastes amazing.

Correct. That was my point. (I worked many a labourer and call center and server jobs, and I am not an entitled ######, and I expect neither are you, or he)

And I +1 your point as well.

No, the police arrest you for disturbing the peace. Grow up.

It was a joke - lighten up!

However, there was no need for police to deal with this situation. Events like this have security and/or attendants that can escort people causing a disruption out of the room. The police should not be used to quell public dissent against corporations. Then again we've seen police in America being used to detain children over petty disputes, so this really shouldn't be any surprise to anyone.

People should get educated in our politics first and foremost. It's not fair to McDonald's either to crucify them for something they're not obligated to do.

$15/hr is unreasonable and her reasons for asking for that much are equally laughable. It's also unreasonable to expect a pay raise every year when we all know that the economy can't support it. I've gone maybe 5 years now without a raise and I'm "skilled". I've essentially taken a pay cut since cost of living and inflation have gone up faster than my salary. Everyone is feeling it but it doesn't make it McDonald's fault. Blame your politicians.

People can ask for whatever they want to ask at the risk of their own jobs. There is nothing wrong with asking for more. "Please sir, can I have some more"

$15 is unreasonable to start, maybe start with minimum then after working there for over a year they could get full pay of around $13, then yearly raises of 10-50 cents.

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/mcdonald-share-billions-profits-fast-food-workers-labor-134659802.html

?You used to have fast-food industry where teenagers were trying to get Jordans and jeans,? says Fells, referring to the high-top sneakers named for basketball great Michael Jordan. "Now the average age is 28 years old. Most of the workers are women? They have children. They have rent. They need clothing. They need shelter.? But they usually make the minimum wage of $7.25 when they need more than $20 an hour in New York City just to survive, says Fells.

He blames fast food companies for these low wages and says they can afford to pay workers more.

?These corporations are seeing record profits?with CEOs receiving record pay,? says Fells. ?It?s time to put the brakes on that gravy train?and share those profits with the people who made them,? says Fells. "McDonald?s (MCD) made $5.5 billion in profits and there?s plenty of money to pay the workers who work there and new hires without firing anyone.?

Even at $15 an hour in certain areas it would still be below a living wage. And again, fast food workers today are expected to do more than they did 5 years ago.

It's also low-wage jobs that are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. job market, accounting for about 70% of new jobs created in the second quarter, says Dan Alpert, managing partner at Westwood Capital. Ahead, he sees "a hard row to hoe" for labor organizers and fast food workers because there are so few other jobs available and so many people are looking for work.

McDonald's = student job

You've been working there for 10 years?  Fail #1. Get a real job and give your kid the life he/she deserve.

You think the job you do should be paid $20/h? Fail #2.  Anybody can do this job... you don't need any special skills no knowledge...

#1, Incorrect, the AVERAGE age of someone working at McDonald's is 28 years old.

#2, Correct, but anyone can also be a garbage man, they get paid $25+ or a janitor and they make $17! These people handle your food not your waste! The amount of skill required doesn't mean that the work is easier to do, just easier to train for. Which actually saves McDonald's more money that they could be sharing with their employees, after they proved themselves reliable after a year, instead of just high end executives.

the big picture is, look how Congress has so heavily burdened business to the point most jobs are now outsourced to other countries.

This is the reason people with degrees in whatever, can't find jobs, are heavily burdened with government debt of college debt...

does this surprise anyone?

Not I...

Maybe we should have our workers working for $150 a month and 18 hour days with no benefits.

I know so little to deal with all that ****.... literally.

Eh,  a lot of it is automated and they just drive and operate the truck.

Still impressive though.

the point I was making was from second hand experience from my dads business. It has nothing to do with what you are taking about and everything to do with the fact that Mcdonalds exploits its workers.

think about that for a minute. you act as if mcdonalds pays their employees to keep within the rate of inflation. the millions mcdonalds makes, upon millions. remember: the minumum wage is raised by the federal governement. how many times in the last 2 decades has it been raised? once?

Wow, $15 an hour to work as a fast food jockey?  I would have loved that when I worked for Dairy Queen...when I was f---ing 16 years old!  If you're older than 22 and working in fast food as a clerk, it's time to grow the f up and move on.

Funny how you came up with the age of 22.

Yes, she wants a union to represent employees without fear of retribution, how can this be a reason to get arrested?, didn't trade unions start in america/macdonaldland?

Good for her for speaking up,
