McDonald's Employee Detained for Confronting Company President

it does sound like that Homer Simpson had first job at fast food, then he gets great job at nuclear power plant, right?

Anyway...  I believe that USA government pay people money for SSI, SSDI, or SSA each year with small raise money up like 15 or 30 dollars each year.  that is unfair!

then get a real job? mcdonalds is not meant to be a permanent job unless you are going management .... I hate people who work in the fast food industry who think they deserve better pay... you're disposable, your job is meaningless, you can be easily replaced by someone who wants the money

Yes, she wants a union to represent employees without fear of retribution, how can this be a reason to get arrested?, didn't trade unions start in america/macdonaldland?

Good for her for speaking up,

And unions are dying, down to ~14% of the workforce - evenly split between government and private employers. That's right, only a few percent of private employees are unionized. It's been declining for a half century.

Funny how you came up with the age of 22.

Around that is when most folks graduate college or realize they need to get into some sort of trade.

She needs to realize that fast food jobs are rarely meant to be "careers", she's right you can't survive on wages like that. People need to start looking for real jobs and if there's none in their educational bracket they need to go back to school (although I can see why Americans are not too interested in doing so, the cost of going to school in the US is CRAZY)

she worked for MD for 10 years and deserves to get well-paid not only for what she had done for it, but for her loyalty. She is brave enough,I think, to fight against unfairness.

Well it is McDonalds, lets be honest.. just because you work somewhere for 10 years doesn't mean you should get paid $30 an hour. It's a low skill/low education job, anyone can do it. If she doesn't like the pay scale/range, perhaps she should seek some education assistance and move up to a new tier type of job.

maybe i'm missing something but how much is an average hourly payment in the US? because 15$ per hour is more than most people get in my country..

It still amuses me that some people don't realise these 2 basic facts: That there are in general far more unskilled workers than skilled workers in the world, some of whom just don't have the intellectual capacity to do anything better (regardless of how many college courses you put them through), and secondly that there is far more unskilled labour available and always will be. Put simply people shouldn't be punished by being paid a wage they have no chance of living off, that isn't fairness it's slave labour.

Around $7.25 per hour here in Pennsylvania at least.

How does one get education when they can barely keep their family afloat? It's easy for many of us to sit here browsing neowin with the privilege of good education and to suggest other people to do the same, but it's not so simple. There are reasons why people even with college degrees have to resort to working hourly jobs at walmart and such just to get by.

It is a real job, harder than most unskilled labor jobs and the least paid.

Which is what I did, I still had to work at fast food twice in between jobs and that lasted for 2+ years each time before I eventually was able to move on, not everyone is so lucky.

Wrong, with more and more unskilled labor jobs and less and less skilled labor jobs, it is coming to the point that these will be the careers of the future. Also you try to afford school and a family and an education making less than $1000 a month.

It's still a job, harder than you realize, you sound like you haven't worked fast food recently as they are forcing workers to do more and more with less and less staff.

Exactly, with the reminder that these jobs aren't as easy as they used to be.

The thing to remember is that someone needs to do these jobs, the average age of fast food employees is around 28, which means these aren't the jobs they use be with the mentality that they are for teenagers only. These people handle your food or make it possible for you to shop conveniently. and people feel they don't deserve any respect simply because training people for these jobs is easier. Remember just because training someone is easier doesn't make the job easy.

The high turn-over rates are usually because the people can't work physically hard and fast enough, or they quit because "the job is ######" which means it's harder than many seem to think. Fast food is harder than retail. Also, the ungrateful people who constantly diminish any joy from the job are a main cause of frustration here.

Exactly. Only skilled workers deserve more pay. I don't care if you have been somewhere for 50 years, if you haven't managed to improve your toolset in all that time then you don't deserve any more money.

Unskilled workers still work hard and improve over time with no benefits for those improvements. These aren't easy jobs just because the learning curve is smaller. They still bust their asses to serve ungrateful people who belittle them because the learning curve is small... They are, in essence, customer support that also are cooks, cashiers, janitors, and management all in one, for the lowest wage possible. There list of tasks is ever growing and their pay stays the same.

If the person who hauls your garbage away earn 4x as much, the people who serve you, clean after you, and deal with you should be given a comparable wage... Over time.

Everyone who thinks lowly of these people do not understand this job market at all!

They may do all of that and more, but they are easily replaceable, and that is the kiss of death. We do have a few unskilled workers who we consider not replaceable, and most are. It's not a good bargaining position to be in.

The reality of the situation isn't helped by people actively dismissing any fight as a waste of time. Sure they are easily replaceable, they still are allowed to try to improve their working conditions. These positions need someone to work them, and I am personally tired of these workers being mistreated because they can get someone else frustrated just as easily, but its okay because the new workers won't know any better until they too fight and can also be easily replaced so on and so forth. These people need respect because they care about the job enough to put up with this bs, but are only asking for a bit more over time.

if a job is dignifying and it's hard, why should be underpaid? that's one of the biggest problems societies have today, people that work very hard earn very little and have even more low commodities.

Just wondering how much is a supermarket worker's hourly rate is in USA?

In australia and is my job, I get paid $20.20 an hour with reduced pension on top.

A supermarket position is very popular with young parents. Perhaps she should try her local shops.
