SMTP error from remote mail server : 550 5.7.1 Message rejected due to cont

Not sure if this is the correct forum but i'm assuming it's related to Exchange server at the destination so here goes..

 

A client has come to me saying when they send emails to anyone on a specific domain, it's being rejected with the following error:

Subject: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender 

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. 

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its 
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: 

someone@xxxx.com

I told the client it's a problem at their end rejecting the email for some reason, maybe aggressive content restrictions in place? They replied that they have already queried with the them and they have been assured it's a problem at our end.

 

I'm not familiar with the error, never seen it before and i don't use Exchange. 

 

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Could be either end.  The recipient is using the Content Filter of Exchange, possibly configured a bit too aggressively.  They could lower their SCL threshold to allow the message through.

 

Conversely there is something about the messages being sent that is triggering the Content Filter; any chance you can upload a sample message?

Could also be the antispam filter picking up a word and incorrectly labelling it a town in the uk had that problem 'scunthorpe' (theres a naughty word it in)

Yeah it's the remote server rejecting it, could be keywords, attachments, etc......

Send a simple "test" message to their admin..

 

Does that get through?  Plain text with some tike test message as subject, did you get this?

I was gonna say that too. It sounds like the content filter is configured to block certain words which might be in the senders signature or something like that. Plain text is a good way to test as well.

Back when I use to admin this sort of thing, this was a somewhat common sort of issue. It was sometimes quite difficult working with remote admins that did not really understand what they were doing ;)

It is quite sad that who you brought this to at the remote domain could not clearly see it was there system rejecting the email.

Its sometimes useful to ask them to explain the error message to you, pointing out how you do not understand where in the error

It states remote server, with their IP address sent a 550 error could be your server. If need be sniff your connection showing the smtp traffic between your server and theirs so that you can show them where their server gives a 550.

Message rejected due to content restrictions. their mail filter doesn't like something...much like my phone doesnt like me typing on it

Still no further forward, i'm trying to get contact information for their admin as it's hard passing information between a middle man.

 

My client said it only started happening a week a go, she has said they aren't receiving emails from them as well as being able to send them. They are blaming us because they sent said emails to my clients personal email and they went through ok..

If they are denying your mail it is on their end. If mail is not hitting your spam serveice/mail server, and you need to verify this on your end..it is most def on their end... you/they need to be able to read and understand the messages you/they are getting from the mail server.

This states the message got there, but was rejected on the other end. Which ever this other end is has to put in a rule to allow from you or the sender needs to change what is in the message to be able to go through. It is a content restriction, could be that it doesnt like a word in the body because it contains a bad word, eg ASSebbly, or it contains an attachment that it doesnt like. Whatever the content is it doesn't like it.

Now for the opposite, you need to post their bounce back.

You need to make this very clear to the other end, if you are receiving this bounce back....you are not responsible for their mail server/filter. Our messages are reaching your site and your site is denying us for some reason. Please have your it staff in charge of the mail server/spam filter put is on a whitelist. You may have to do the same on your end for theirs

yeah if they can not send you mail - what kickback does the user on that end get when trying to send an email to say your email address?  Have them send it to you via fax or your personal email address or something.
