PETA's Pokemon Parody Battles Animal Abuse

Recommended Posts

I hate to draw attention to the wackos over at PeTA because I know that is what they want, but this one is too amusing to pass up.

PETA has another Pokemon-themed parody game, this time featuring Pikachu and friends going up against the evils of McDonalds.

You wouldn't expect PETA to have much in the way of a game development department, but you'd be surprised. After People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released Pokemon: Black and Blue last year, the animal rights group has created a sequel (of sorts) with a new parody game, Pokemon: Red, White, & Blue. The browser game lets you rescue tortured Pokemon from animal abusers like McDonalds workers and customers, and urges players to "choose kindness and go vegan - after all, even humans can evolve."

The core protest here is against Nintendo using its iconic mascots (via Happy Meal toys) to endorse McDonalds' abuse of animals. Heavy-handed though the writing may be - somebody swoons every single time PETA is mentioned in the dialogue - the gameplay gets its message across while staying surprisingly true to the Pokemon battle formula. Of course, you'll only be battling human enemies: the game isn't afraid to point fingers at the Pokemon series for desensitizing children to animal violence.

"Our parody game is a fun way to tackle a serious issue - that it's wrong for Nintendo to allow McDonald's to lure kids in using its beloved, cute icons, when the reality is that Pokemon have been used to mask would horrify them" says PETA's Joel Bartlett. You can play the parody game on PETA's website. It only takes a few minutes to complete, but it certainly doesn't waste time delivering its message.

How does PETA even have the rights to use Pok?mon? Couldn't they be sued?

They'd probably revel in the opportunity to draw more attention to themselves.

As much as PETA are a bunch of whacko's, I've -always- clearly seen that Pok?mon is nothing but a cutesified version of animal fighting/baiting. I don't let my kids play it.

It's as much animal fighting as chess is warfare.

Poor kids. Sad to see kids grow up with nutjob parents.

So you think it's OK to let kids play a game full of simulated animal fighting?

Would you rather they play chess, Stratego, many team sports or other strategy games - almost all simulated human fighting/warfare? (especially US & Canadian football!)

You are too tied up in symbolism.

I guess you don't let your kids play much of anything since so many games simulate something.

british football was originally played by neighbouring villages with a head, usually human.

polo with a dead goat (still played - see buzkashi or kopar).

lacrosse was and is a combat sport. etc. etc. etc.

animal rightists need to get a life!

peta kills over 95% of pets surrendered to them with their false promises that they will be re-homed. many are killed as their van leaves your home & are dumped in a convenient trash bin behind a mall or supermarket. peta believes pets are better dead than living in a loving home. in their hearts they know they are right and the rest of the world is wrong - one definition of insanity. and they are insane. they have no idea what 'ethical' is, having no perceptible ethics themselves.

At the end of the day this is free advertising for McDonald's because it does seem to be making a lot of people hungry. Honestly I don't believe this will affect most people's opinion on these two companies.
