Who could forget the classic systemd release with arch linux; a completely unfinished, broken and unworkable release which made it's way to 'stable'... Amazingly enough it's now pretty stable and good. Well, the arch linux team are back with a vengence and this time they've broken cinnamon in the upgrade from 1.8/1.9 to 2.0! No more will your cinnamon desktop work again, outstanding!

So I did a full system upgrade and now have the following cinnamon packages;

(You CAN'T remove translations, what a joke).

On my normal user account if I use cinnamon via SLiM or startx I get no desktop, nor a background image but get the bottom panel, opening terminal/firefox from the quick launch works fine, clicking the menu however opens it and freezes all of cinnamon, as does left/right clicking any of the panel cinnamon icons. So I thought it'd be an incompatible configuration with my user, made a new user without any cinnamon configuration and launched it from that... Pretty much the same, if launched from startx it crashes if things are clicked but if launched from SLiM then it does nothing, it doesn't even load and just freezes.

Tried launching cinnamon with cinnamon-start and cinnamon-start-cinnamon, both give the same results. Looked on the arch linux forums and there seems to be a similar problem with other users, they say using cinnamon-start-cinnamon fixes their problems but it doesn't here.

Anyone got any advice for how to fix this junk or does the arch linux team really just not have a clue what STABLE means and I'm screwed?

If their updates continually break your system I'd be using rsync or dd to make a backup before updating, so you encounter problems you can roll-back. You must have missed that part of unix class. Updates generally are not smooth, especially on systems thriving to be as tiny/efficient/customized as possible.

I mean I updated windows from version 7 to version 8, and now am getting BSODs left and right - Critical process died, no page kernel error or something. Guess commercial software is no better.

I hate to be "that guy", but the Arch team has nothing to do with Cinnamon, it's a community package (as the package names in your post show), and just glancing at the Arch forum showed that the SLiM config format changed (so you just have to merge your changes to the new file)

Have you thought about using Ubuntu?

I hate to be that other guy, but Arch is not meant to be noob friendly. I'd also recommend Ubuntu or another "simplistic" distro that just works.

Post your Xorg log for me, please. Are you running AMD Catalyst? I would guess you are. If so, try using a different (albeit lower quality) driver for now until the good ones get updated.

Ditto this.. I do like Arch a lot but learned that the hard way, backups before updating anything system related. Bleeding edge can be messy sometimes. If you want something relatively current but not quite so.. volatile, may want to look into say Debian testing or even Sid. I've had significantly less incidents of forehead/keyboard collisions with that one. Arch is a fun distro but not one I'd recommend if you need it to work 100%.. when it goes wonky, it can do it in a pretty colossal way.. some of them merit a "I survived the Arch ____ update" t-shirt.

Arch isn't cinnamon, no, but no other distros are having problems yet in arch cinnamon was moved from testing to STABLE, if something does not work, it is most certainly NOT stable. It's not the first time this has happened, first it was systemd then it was boost and libboost, then sc-tools and now this.

Unfortunately I don't have a backup of packages since this is on an 18.2GB drive with some programs on squashfs compressed mounts to save space, used to use the arch 'wayback' archive when I had problems but the maintainer got rid of it recently, which is a shame.

Xorg log showed an error with NetworkManager and nothing else, I solved half of it by starting NetworkManager but it doesn't stop the problems.

Also no I'm not using Catalyst drivers, the GPU here is an nvidia GTX 9600 using the official nvidia drivers.

I tried recompiling the old 1.9 versions of cinnamon but they've changed a lot of packages and quite a lot, so you can't get rid of cinnamon-translations etc. nor get the old cinnamon-settings-daemon back and it mixes 2.0 and 1.9 versions then fails to start.

Ditto this.. I do like Arch a lot but learned that the hard way, backups before updating anything system related. Bleeding edge can be messy sometimes. If you want something relatively current but not quite so.. volatile, may want to look into say Debian testing or even Sid. I've had significantly less incidents of forehead/keyboard collisions with that one. Arch is a fun distro but not one I'd recommend if you need it to work 100%.. when it goes wonky, it can do it in a pretty colossal way.. some of them merit a "I survived the Arch ____ update" t-shirt.

Been my plan for a while to switch to another distro but I just don't really have the time to download everything, put it on USB, install it and then get all the other software installed and working (using this as a development platform with Quartus, MPLAB, SDCC, etc.)

Had an Arch VM for my cross-compiling dev environment.

Left it unused when I got stuck doing windows dev. Came back to it a year later, tried to do an upgrade, BOOM. Learnt a hard lesson about rolling-release distros. I'm still having nightmares about it..

Wiped the drive (/home was on another drive) and dumped Debian on it. Not as cutting-edge, but also made me less inclined to inflict self-harm..

Was getting annoyed of messed up fonts in fluxbox (ironically since an arch update broke them) so installed KDE, ran out of disk space whilst installing so removed KDE and removed as much of gnome as I could... Result? Cinnamon now works fine once again, so it's got a conflict with something in gnome.

Although it's a shame that years into the development of cinnamon and you STILL, CANNOT ALT+TAB whilst dragging a darn file.

But, I understand that you to use Arch, and that's cool.. I used it for a long time myself.. but I got tired of having issues that you are talking about.. I switched back over to Ubuntu, stripped it down, installed Gnome3, and never looked back.. I like Ubuntu because of their repos.. but.. I hate Ubuntu how it comes.. Thankfully, a few hours with google, you can get it running just how you want it :D <3 linux

Ubuntu's too bloated for me. Ideally I'd like to have a gentoo setup, but having to recompile massive amounts of packages every time they're updated stops me from installing it, so arch is a stopgap.

Why not use the Ubuntu Mini ISO? Its the equivalent of a Debian netinstall. That itself is another possibility.

Ubuntu itself is bloated, yeah stick it on any PC and it'll work, find the hardware etc. because it's not tailored, arch and gentoo are tailored to specific hardware, so yes you get less driver support but as a result of having much less in the packages being linked with less libraries, it's much faster.

I'm back to playing with Manjaro. I doubt I would have the patience to deal with raw Arch because of things like this.
