I wish to bring some more performance to my actual system (Intel Core i7 4770+Asus H87PRO+4GB RAM Corsair) by upgrading RAM to 8GB (one 4GB Module) or buying a new ssd (need suggestions here). Which will bring me much more performance If my actual requests are : 1. Graphics : Photoshop/Illustrator/Flash 2. Parametric 3D CAD : Autodesk Inventor Professional (including FEA) - Engineering. 3. Web (HTML/CSS) 4. 3D Modelling (beginner) : Autodesk 3Ds Max. The 4'st request is somehow optional..cause I'm not an 3D Artist Thanks for any suggestion! dafox Posted October 13, 2013 Share Posted October 13, 2013 Why not do both? 4gb of ram is cheap, a 120gb or 250gb ssd isn't that much of stretch and then your pc will fly along. psionicinversion Posted October 13, 2013 Share Posted October 13, 2013 If your using programs like that alot id up the RAM cus SSD wont be that much use for those programs id of thought... for normal people who just game an SSD is the best upgrade cus wed already have the ram and gfx cards upto where it needs to be but for you id go with RAM cus those programs will be more memory intensive and will run faster with more ram. But like someone else has said you could always go both cus id imagine 1x 4GB stick would only cost ya like ?30 maybe and 120GB ssd be like ?100 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dxgs Posted October 14, 2013 Share Posted October 14, 2013 SSDs will help more, if you are running out of RAM and constantly paging. The more RAM you get, the more irrelevant an SSDs becomes for non I/O or disk intensive tasks. Photoshop/image handling and cad designing benefit more from RAM than disk performance. The more they can put on memory, the faster they can render and the least the program will lag while handling heavy designs. An SSD will only help in putting the design onto and out of RAM, after its in memory, an SSD is doing nothing. During rendering and handling, RAM is more important. I, personally, would go with both, and if you are serious about any of these "usages", I'd push RAM up even further considering how cheap it is nowadays. There is no such thing as too much RAM in this dawn and age for a design professional. If you need to pick one first and then later another, get RAM first, then SSD. Havinf said that, looking at the programs you use, you should also have 8gb of ram. Get the ssd first, get the ram when you can. Ram is seriously cheap. Overall you will notice more from the ssd, but there could be certain situations when editing certain files that 4gb may bring your computer to a crawl. philcruicks Posted October 14, 2013 Share Posted October 14, 2013 Based on your use requirements, more RAM without a shadow of a doubt. Here's the basics, and SSD will load everything faster, windows in about 20 sec as opposed to 1-2mins+ on an HDD, your programs will also load much much faster. Please note the term load, unless they are highly disk intensive programs they will not run faster, just load faster. Your apps such as CAD and 3D modelling will benefit far more from a RAM upgrade, as the 3D model you are working on is stored in RAM. Web will run fine either way, your system is already plenty powerful enough for that. and Graphics obviously a good graphics card will help, but out of the two potions again RAM is better than an SSD for increasing running performance. So if comes down to what do you want, loading time performance increase(SSD) or a performance increase while actually running the program and doing things in it (RAM). As mentioned the SSD will give you the most visible performance increase, as its such a huge upgrade over the HDD. but for the things your doing the RAM is probably the better option.
