Adium 1.5.8

What's new in Adium 1.5.8:

  • Changed the default tab switching shortcuts for new users to Control-Tab/Control-Shift-Tab, to match Safari. This was meant to be done for 1.5.4 but it did not work that time. (#16102)
  • XMPP: refer to XMPP as "XMPP (Jabber)". Unfortunately, just "XMPP" still has some potential for confusion. (#16435)
  • Fixed SIP accountnames to be case-sensitive. (Pete Woods) (#16237)
  • Enabled a large number of TLS cipher suites, including ECC suites and suites new in TLS 1.2.
  • Fix a problem causing Sametime login to fail. (Jonathan Rice) (#16345)
  • Try to avoid Twitter's rate limiting causing Adium to go in a reconnection loop. (#16418)
  • Don't try to download images included in HTML when pasting in the text field. (#15724)

It's good to see that updates are still being offered, Adium is one of the few free apps which I decided to throw a donation into.

But, I dunno. I removed it from my system not too long ago after using one daily for the past 12+ years.. Maybe it's just me but nobody in my circles seems to use IM software now.

No one uses IM any more. I lost a lot of online-friends with the demise of Windows Live Messenger, and the fact that I don't use Facebook much.  :s

Same the people I talk to dropped as they hate skype and decided o just not talk to others instead of changing messengers.

IMing just isn't as relevant as it was before.  Its all been replaced by "Messenger" services which make sense because they are more mobile compatible and still support chat-like/IM interactions.  I love Adium but don't have a reason to fire it up anymore :(.  I miss it too.  Although I think Messenger type services are better, they also don't promote as much casual conversation as IMing did.

Back in the day, it was fun to see who else was online to strike up a conversation with (or who would strike up a conversation with you).  Now-a-days you have to have a particular reason to send someone a message because just saying "Hey! What's up?" and having it buzz their smartphone just doesn't seem appropriate.
