Trillian for Linux: Early access for Pro customers!

tux.png

Good news, Linux fans: we?ve been quietly building Trillian for your favorite operating system and today we?re ready to release an early access version into the wild for Trillian Pro customers only.Download it here while you read the announcement!

What is Trillian for Linux?

Trillian for Linux represents the next leap forward for Cerulean Studios and desktop messaging applications on Linux. We?ve rolled up our sleeves and dived into the world of GTK+, building the purest and most native version of Trillian that we can ? this is not just a gussied up web browser control! ? with an initial eye on strong suport for Ubuntu. Trillian for Linux boasts a beautiful contact list with searching, tabbed message windows with inline image support, emoticons, screen capture!, a rich activity history viewer, file transfers, group chats, integration with Ubuntu?s messaging menu and much more.

Why an early access program for Pro customers only?

The honest reason is pretty straightforward: we?ve spent years of time and money building Trillian for Linux so far, starting as early as 2011, and we need to ensure that enough of you are serious about supporting the project financially for us to continue with it. Here?s your chance to help us prove that a healthy and vibrant market for Linux applications exists for smaller software shops like Cerulean: go Pro and support our efforts on Linux

Will Trillian for Linux be free upon final release?

Yes. The early access program will eventually end and the product will be free for everyone to use and enjoy, so if you?re unable to purchase Pro today you can rest assured that Trillian for Linux will make its way to you in the future.

What?s next?

We plan to follow up in the coming weeks with an additional behind-the-scenes look at what went into building Trilian for Linux: we think you?ll be surprised how much effort goes into a project like this and how many minor details we fret about behind the scenes. Thank you for your support!

Same for me really. I'm more or less only using Skype these days; multi-messengers like Trillian/Pidgin/Adium have long lost their appeal to me.

the sooner, the better i say. pidgin is meh and empathy with the icq plugin even worse. i used trillian since years on windows and it still is my favourite multi messenger on my android device, however i dont like the latest version that much anymore. what they have done with the login screen is unbelievable :(

Damn, I didn't know people still used IM, and that Trillian was still around and in development.

Last I saw Trillian was adding all the bloat they could find though. I'd rather use any number of other options on Linux.

So you're not familiar with Skype at all?

Skype has replaced Windows Live Messenger and has a pretty huge user base.

So you're not familiar with that at all?

I use Trillian for MSN / Skype as I simply think the Skype client is horrible. I do find IM is generally dead though compared to a couple of years ago, most people I know simply use Facebook / WhatsApp now.

It is nice to see Trillian on Linux however :)

True, I suppose there is Skype. That's a little different with video as it's main use though. I just figured most everyone I know moved to texting rather than IM. That or any of the multiple chat apps on phones now. Doesn't seem like quite as much interest in a chat tethered to your computer. But I meant it half jokingly anyway.

To me Skype is an IM first. Video/audio chat are nice to have add-ons. I find it handier to have a dedicated IM software to use on desktop/laptop. (On my smartphone I generally use WhatsApp for IM.)

@Brian M: I always found the IRC part built into multi-protocol IMs to be lacking. Dedicated IRC clients for me please.

Tons of people use IM. A lot of people seem to think things like facebook chat have 'replaced' IM, but it is still IM... Trillian is a nice client that allows you to connect to pretty much every IM service there is, facebook chat, google talk, aim, msn etc... I only use facebook chat and google talk but still use trillian on my windows machine because it has good integration with the desktop (far better than the official facebook messenger application or google hangouts in gmail or the hangouts chrome app :p), and its also nice to have both services integrated in one consistant application. The windows version is also a very lightweight applciation, it only uses like 10-15mb of ram for me.

Maybe your friends have matured?

I see that most non-tech savvy people dump IM as they become adults. Only those who are very active online keep it.

I use facebook chat all the time via trillian and that's IM. I mean it still beats the ###### out of SMS.

You calling me old? Huh??

Yeah, most of my friends aren't tech-savvy at all. Hell, plenty of them don't even have a computer to IM on, haha. I only use IM for work now.

I too have moved onto mostly using Skype primarily for work. I used to use Trillian and even had a Pro subscription (it was nice being able to pick up a conversation on my phone and also have my chat history synced up). Good to see them release a Linux version but not sure how much of an appeal that will really have anymore...

I know this is more trillian in general but : try to find out the Icq uid for an user on trillian for Android.... It's not possible. I find this an absolute shocker. Lacking such a basic feature..
