Hi-res panorama: Space shuttle Endeavour's flight deck

Explore inside space shuttle Endeavour's flight deck at the California Science Center. Zoom in to see the details on the controls.

In space shuttle Endeavour's flight deck, where the commander and pilot would sit, there are more than 2,000 switches, dials and buttons cover the walls and ceiling. Spare surfaces are covered with Velcro, where astronauts would stick anything ? pens, cameras, food bags, laptops ? to keep them from floating away. View the panorama above at this link in fullscreen and zoom in to see the details.

wow, how in the hell do they remember what they all do?

The ship is on remote control, the buttons do nothing. It's so the commander can feel important. ;)

And the coming US spacecraft; Sierra Nevada Dream Chaser, SpaceX DragonRider, Boeing CST-100 and NASA MPCV (Orion), will all have mostly glass cockpits and be able to fly autonomously - crewed or not.

Looks overly complicated, they could clean this up with a few touchscreens and Windows 8 Shuttle Edition.

Thinking Windows 8.1, cause now you have a start button!!

Woohoo the Canadian name and flag is the only country with it's name inside.

Thats because the Canadian Space Agency makes a lot of the equipment that is used in the shuttles and the International Space Station.
