What was one of the first things you looked up on the internet?

Recommended Posts

I remember back in 1993/1994 my family would go for "Internet Night" at our high school and use the Mac's in the library to "Browse the Internet" for about an hour.

So the question for all of you is "What is the one of the first things you remember looking up when you first got on the internet"?

For me I remember browsing the internet and looking for information about Red Dwarf and finding fan pages and being amazed and dazzled. I still remember it like it was yesterday!

Not sure if I remember that far.  Back in 93/94 I was probably looking for some kind of cheat codes or something for school work.  Of course, that was when the internet was mostly text and the first internet provider I used was Prodigy.

Well I brought the internet to my house in 95 or 96. Dial up was grand. The first thing I looked up was message boards and how to fix/troubleshoot blue screens.and computer lockups. Download software and porn were my next things.

I was friends with a person on the ms boards named pepsi, she has gone off to be a manager at microsoft. It was great, theb everyone started to use my handle, while not very unique no one used it. I was hello and I figured no one else on the boards would know or understand what sc302 is so I have had that since 99

If I remember right, reading up on using Gopher & Veronica, and eventually locating another internet provider.. wasn't that much available yet for me, mostly did a lot of FidoNet, BBSing, etc. My first was CompuServe (way back with my 300 baud acoustic, whee fun.) GUI based web browsers wouldn't roll around for a couple more years yet. It was pretty expensive, billed per minute, although that's not the only reason I used CIS at the time. Literally racked up a monthly bills of over $400 talking to who would later be my wife. Was pretty happy when I got a "proper" email address.. my first being 70505.221@compuserve.com, ugh.

Nude images of Christina Applegate alias Kelly Bundy. On Usenet. 1991, on a friend's Amiga 3000. Connection via 2400 baud modem.

Worst of all, the pixelated photos we did find were all fake.

Year 2000, I couldnt believe that Yahoo was something that I could get for free - I thought my uni had been paying for a service.  It was mail, OS customisation for Windows ME and porn.

I cant remember the first thing but at school we had to use a search engine to find info on "Eiffel tower".

At home set up an email address and searched for naked ladies.

First thing i can think of was Napster!

First song i got from it was Britney Spears - Born to Make you Happy. Took about 40 minutes to download

I soon removed it as i didn't know much and thought i'd get found out. Also i was only allowed an hour a night as it was expensive to use the Internet back then.

3DFX Voodoo drivers.

I remember I purchased my first discreet card, a Diamond riva or SIS chip I think? I couldn't run Half Life nor much of anything else. So I got the Voodoo card but it ran like crap. Manual said I may need to update the drivers via internet so that was actually the only reason I initially got it. I watched ZDTV at the time so that was the first website I went to after I got the driver. Game did run better but it took a few years until hardware got good enough to run most games ok at least. I also remember all the ones with OpenGL option ran terrible. Glide was where it was at. I had AOL, didn't take me long to hook up with some local girls on there and loved the internet ever since, was easier than going to the bar.

Pictures of Homer Simpson for a presentation I had to do in class, must have been 1999 or 2000 when I was 8.

1995 I was at an open day at Oxford university looking at their new PC lab.  They were showing off their Internet connection and said to go play.  The first site I ever went to was IMDB looking at Pulp Fiction.

I discovered the internet relatively late. My first touch to it wasn't even at my home. I remember that I searched for pictures and I was very fascinated when the search engine came up with relevant results.

Then I had this dial-up connection installed at home that I used only occasionally for school stuff as it had this per-second fee that was super expensive.

The first time I used and saw the internet was through a friend that had America On Line around probably 1994 and the very first thing I remember doing was getting into an AOL chat room and chatting with someone in Germany who I didn't have the slightest clue who they were, I was amazed at how that instant conversation was happening so easily and between me and a person in the other side of the world for free, it was an incredible experience, I was hooked! a week later I bought my first computer at Circuit City for $300 lol it was a Pavilion by Hewlett Packard :-)
