Check Out Xbox One's New Friends List

It stands to reason that Xbox Live on Xbox One would adopt the basic features of social networking?following friends, activity feeds and such. Larry Hryb of Xbox Live explains how all of that works in this video of the console's Friends app.

Remember, your friends list expands to 1,000 under the new Xbox One, but you may also have unlimited followers, just like Twitter. Your feed on Xbox Live is filled up with features such as your latest game results and acheivements earned. So, think of it as a social network FILLED with bot-written updates on what everyone is doing in their games. Awesome, right?

OK, kidding. Let's give this thing a chance. Other features include favoriting people who are in your friends list, so you may more easily find them when you're looking to connect in a party or in a match. And yes, you still have full control over what you choose to share publicly, just like on Xbox Live with the Xbox 360. There's a more detailed explanation at the link if you missed something above.

I can see this being very helpful to anyone that is interesting in gaining a following to perhaps make money from gaming, like people on youtube and twitch do. Also, I could see the existing youtube and twitch people making heavy use of this to grow their user base as well.

For the average gamer, I could see people following popular gamers and it could be a great way to check out a game they don't own via that person's game dvr clips

For me personally, I could see myself following some of the people I follow on youtube, so I'm shocked to find a social media feature that I would actually use.  MS managed to leverage social media in a way that could be cool for gamers.

That is slick... Twitter-ized, Xbox Live.

Dear Microsoft, rather you know it or not. You have got a HIT, with this feature. This coupled with dynamic achievements make for some interesting gameplay scenarios.

Follow 10 random people who don't speak the same language, and you have to party up with them and win at a strategy/tactical game. Having communication be just as important, makes for learning the cultures of others. Makes for some crazy achievements... And you can continue to follow them, or not after the game is over.

Follow 10 random celebrities who, game, and go to war vs them in BF4...

Xbox One, is goin to keep a lot of people in the house on weekends.

Well now we know they aren't going to mix your friends list with your followers list and that you have privacy controls to effect how it works for you.  Also like the option to "appear offline", yay!

I actually like the idea of having followers, now that we can post videos of our gameplay and so on this does let you "follow" players who are good online in MP without you or they having to know you personally and so on.   It's a quicker way to get to know more people without jumping in right away.     I know I've had friend requests on Live with the 360 from people I don't know but who I've played on the same team a bit in MP only, it's done so that the same group could get together just for that MP session but not actually know each other outside of that area etc.   That's how I view it really, and the idea behind it.
