I'm just not feeling it. It'll be a wait and see situation for me.

ummm you can close down privacy completely, not share anything with anyone, not even have friends, disable kinect completely, so in what way is this to open ?

The xbox is built for the future just like the 360 was, a first gen xbox right out of the box today, you can start up and have an old dated UI, less performance and usability and functions. hook it up to the internet and grab the latest update and you have a system that is faster with a modern responsive UI.

that is what they mean by built for the future, it's built to support future technology, they rely less on hardcoded hardware functions and on software function that can be upgraded and changed with time or upgraded as needed.

hardware wise it can also be upgraded since it FULLY supports external disks for EVERYTHING so you don't need to replace the internal drive.

Microsofts PR team has screwed (Yusuf during the reveal anyone?) up and now people have really bad misconceptions of the XB1.  Microsoft has been doing a better job of letting the Engineers speak on whats going on (something they should have done from the beginning), but I wonder if the damage that Mattrick and Yusuf caused, will linger longer than what we initially thought.

Myself personally, am totally geek'd out and can't wait for the XB1...

I could point out how every one of your points are wrong or invalid, but it's basically summed up by "you don't really know what you'r talking about and have been listening to to many mis-informed conspiracy theorists"

I don't really bother arguing with obvious trolls who arne't going to listen to what I say anyway. all the info is readily available if you read ANY of the articles or news about Xbox one since summer though.

Everything looks good, I suppose. The console seems a lot like facebook to me, and not just in the UI design. I'm a privacy fan and this just seems too open to me. I certainly won't purchase one in 2013, undecided after that.

Every new console release is about progressing technology forward, but to me, saying "built for the future" would include somewhat futureproofing it... That would mean that the console has expandable drives, which I doubted but had some hope for when I saw the title. It could at least ditch the proprietary hardware choices, but that wouldn't be very MS. Alas, the console is built so that you will buy a new one in 5 years. Meh.

Well I'm in a similar boat as you, someone that has no interest in all of these social features.  Unfortunately, both Sony and MS are pushing social features as the next big thing for consoles, so if your a console gamer, its hard to avoid.

MS went down the line showing that you could avoid all of this stuff via settings, so at least we can avoid this stuff.  I'm sure Sony will have similar controls.

I'm not sure how a replaceable hard drive would make a console future proof since that is probably the least important part of a console performance wise.  I would like to be able to replace drives like on the ps4, but I also realize that replacing a hard drive did not make the ps3 anymore future proof.   The hardware in both consoles will still be obsolete in a couple years.

I'm inclined to agree with him. Perhaps you are just not a PC gamer and these seem like new features to you.

cloud - welcome to the "internet"

kinect - webcam and microphone (listening all the time...can even pick you out of a crowd. sup NSA)

record - sup fraps

nice UI - basically windows 8...but without the rest of the Win8 advantages

built the platform like a PC - except without the upgradeability.

I don't think the argument was about what counts as an original feature, but instead it seemed like it was arguing over if the features are even good features.

I'm really not sure why people want to dump on these X1 features when Sony is doing much of the same thing with the PS4 and very little is said about it.  Maybe that's just how it works in a community that is more likely to attack a MS device, but its just silly to me.

So if we step back from the console wars and just say compare the features of both consoles to the pc, we discover that yes, the pc can already do all of that.  Once the new Kinect for pc is released, it will also offer the control features that the X1 or PS4 could.  So lets not try to convince ourselves that the consoles are doing things you can't do on a pc, but lets not forget that this is not new.  Current gen consoles didn't do anything that couldn't be done on a pc, but that didn't stop them from being successful.  Consoles are becoming more and more like pcs with each generation.  The X1 is the closest since it actually runs a pc OS in Win 8.

No, the reason these features mean something to consoles even if they are on pcs in some form, is that consoles are now basically all-in-one entertainment devices focused on delivering content in a TV environment.  PCs may offer the same stuff, but they are general use devices, not built for an entertainment roll alone.  Yes, you can build a pc and install software to create a system that can very much be focused on displaying media, but the general user is not interested in spending the time to do that.  Instead, they can buy a ps4 or X1 and get a ready-made package for those needs.  So all of these futures are indeed new for consoles and represent the continued evolution of consoles into more pc-like devices.

They are good features certainly. I think that long time console players see them as a big step in the right direction while PC gamers think of them as givens. It is certainly nice to have them all integrated together.

Yeah, I think what this shows is that eventually, consoles will no longer be so different from a pc.  I think this is much easier to say about MS than Sony though, since MS seems much more interested in bringing the two together.

Who knows, the next gen could be one without proper console hardware and instead just services that can be streamed to small boxes or accessed via pcs.

Comparing PCs and consoles is always useless. It's like looking at a top of the line graphics card and saying "Meh...Iron Man 3 had better graphics".

They both have their strengths. Currently, MS is stronger on the software end and Sony performs better on hardware and expansion.

Well my point was about merging a console with the pc, not a general opinion of the two consoles  MS has a console that is closer to a pc software wise due to Win 8 being used.  They also have made it clear that they intend to merge all of their devices under one 'Windows' base and have mentioned things like cross platform gaming, etc, as part of that.

So MS is at least openly planning a possible future where an xbox console is basically a media focused pc that is just streamed to or can stand alone.  To the point where a future console might resemble the SteamOS platform where people could buy a game on the pc or console and play it on either.

Sony has made no such indication of interest in that type of future.  But they have shown interest in offering small boxes that get streaming content only, so that could be a future for their consoles.

I am a PC gamer. it doesn't make his points any more valid.

cloud is not the internet. no PC game (with one exception has used the "cloud" yet. that exception is Eve.  Steam has used the cloud to some degree, but that's the same degree that the 360 already does and is just a small part of the cloud.

His Kinect comment is just stupid from the NSA idiocy to comparing it to a webcam and microphone, not even worth getting into. obvious trollbait.

Sure you can record with fraps. of course it sucks a solid chunk of performance out of the game. MS CONTINUOUSLY record all the time, you can at any time save the last 5 minutes of gameplay, or start a manual recording from now on forward. without performance impact. The console/game will also automatically save recordings of awesome stuff you do in the game. not only that, but they also automatically upload it to the internet for you. no encoding, no uploading no converting none of all that mess. Welcome to console gaming, it just works.

Never mind I couldn't care less about recording on either console or PC. and I hate when people insist on making tutorials, guides or hints as youtube videos instead of a short text article that is easier to understand and gets right to the point with a couple of screenshots if necessary.

I'm guessing the Nice UI comment is a hidden trollbait comment about his dislike for windows 8. has no impact either here nor there. but it does have a nice GUI allowing you to switch quickly and fluently between movies, tv and gaming among other things.

while Sony seems to edge out on performance, that's not entirely sure anymore after the revelations about the custom architecture of the One platform, at the very least the edge seems to turn out very slight.

as for expansion. how does the PS4 score higher on expansion. PS4 allows you to expand the hardware by opening the box and plugging in a bigger one. Xbox One allows you to simply plug in an external drive.  One option may be more aesthetically pleasing (depending on the person), the other is easier to do, both do exactly the same.

Why should I bring up counter arguments to obvious troll arguments, half of which have nothing to do with the console, from a troll with a troll avatar... seems rather pointless as your sole purpose was trolling and flame baiting.

Still giving no opinions. Just shouting "TROLL!" when you don't agree and hoping it will stick isn't a good effort.

Cloud is a marketing term for servers.  Unless you manage to host data inside water droplets thousands of feet above earth..  all mmo's use "Cloud" for storage.  All user info is stored in databases, or games are controlled via remote servers.  The cloud is just an easy term for people to understand without needing to know the details.

Any game with a server portion, or a server that records and uses the data could be considered in the cloud.

His Kinect comment is just stupid from the NSA idiocy to comparing it to a webcam and microphone, not even worth getting into. obvious trollbait.

While I agree on the NSA thing.. the kinect is just that.  It is a camera.. that can transfer video over the internet.. and has built in microphones.  It's the same concept as: "You can teach a duck to bark.. but it's still a duck"  Just because the kinect does motion tracking it still has the features of a webcam and mic setup.

I've seen quite a few (burnout for one) games that record what you are doing and allow you to replay.. heck lots of games do kill cams and such.  So MS recording every action all the time isn't something special.  Pretty sure sony is doing the same thing with the PS4.   Also fraps has gotten a lot better, and as the hardware improves the game preformance loss is getting smaller and smaller.

Different strokes for different folks, I like watching video reviews, and guides.  I find them easier to follow than text.

Again, all personal opinion.  Windows 8 is good.. metro sucks.. tile concept sucks... in my opinion.  I would get sick of the UI.. I like the XMB style interface.. again personal opinion.

Xbox One is a tad bit different than anything out there...

It does what the PS4 does, It does what a gaming PC rig can do,  It does what Roku can do, It does what Apple TV can do, It does what a Blu-Ray player can do.

While others are staring at multiple device remote controls, I am simply saying Xbox (insert command here)...

My Son Plays Minecraft heavy on the Xbox 360 (although he has the PC version too), but I also notice that while he is playing Minecraft, he is also watching it on youtube at the same time...  When I informed him that he could just tell the Xbox to "Snap Youtube" and he could do both at the same time (this also includes twitch tv) his jaw nearly hit floor in shock.  He did not believe me about the multi-taksing of Xbox One.  Until he looked it up for himself.

I don't care if you call it the Cloud, Internet, Dedicated Servers, Databases..etc... who cares... If a device was built around being on the internet 24/7, guess what people, it was basically designed for the future.  The world and networks, infrastructures are changing by the minute.  Microsoft realized this and that's why there are 2 OS's in place (not calling a Hyper-Visor an OS  :D ).  They basically put the resources in place that don't and won't interfere with each other during its life cycle.

People think future proof is about the raw horse power of the local box (don't get me wrong that helps out big time)... But what good is resources without the programming and structure, etc.  This is 2013, nobody wants to be tied to the local box any longer.

Do you understand the difference between, real time "replay" and a recording ? and never did I say the PS4 didn't do the same thing or close to it either. of course FRAPS isn't using a special video encoding CPU to encode the video with zero impact. but, sure it's better than it used to be, still sucks a lot of juice from your gaming.  I'm not interested in recording my own games, much less watching anyone elses recorded gameplay anyway.

It does when his sole purpose was to incite flaming and trolling metro. since the GUI itself had absolutely ZERO to do with the topic. or can you give me a valid reason what his opinion of Metro has to do with the console being built for the future... no ? that's because he was trolling.
