Windows 8.1 Questions

Recommended Posts

1. When you install Windows 8.1 doe it replace your product key with another?

2. If you acquire a Windows 8.1 iso DVD somehow, can your Windows 8 product key be used?

3. If you reinstall Windows 8 after having installed Windows 8.1, can you install the Windows 8.1 update again in the future?

4. Does the Windows 8.1 install like a new Windows or like the way a update does?

1. kinda as with using an iso you need to enter a new key (it doesn't accept 8 keys)

2. if you use an iso/dvd to update you will need to use a different key to install (such as the leaked key floating around the internet) but after the install you can re-enter your 8 key and it will reactivate just fine

1 - No your current key is used to activate

2 - This was already said no. 8.0 Keys don't work on 8.1 ISOs. And Brandon LeBanc already said there will be no ISOs other than for TechNet and MSDN people which were released:

The rest were answered already :P

why do they have to make it so difficult tho? it's a mess. I would understand if the recommended upgrade path wasn't such a mess. The windows store was completely unresponsive to me during the whole process of downloading and installing, which took too long but I had no way or knowing what the progress was. let-s not even time about the 3 reboots with their eternal waiting "configuring" times.  or the useless waste of time that is going thru the same "welcome to windows, let's set up a few things.." dialogues.

I dont even wanna know how much disk space the 8->8.1 upgrade takes (in terms of downloading the update and backing stuff up), when compared to a clean install.

overall, VERY disappointed.

Make it so difficult? Which normal person you know is gonna back up, download some ISO and then wipe their system and install clean then restore all their data from whatever location they were backed up to.

This is the simple way, most people aren't downloading it right now as they don't even know it's available. Only us tech people are even aware or care to upgrade right away which of-course means servers are semi-slammed. I downloaded it in about 10mins from the store then the install took about 20mins on my work machine. So yeah, this "eternal waiting" thing wasn't so long so no need to be so dramatic. The "useless" welcome to Windows screens were useful as it's showing that there's progress (progress bars aren't so accurate) while the system was still being setup.

Disk space of my Windows.OLD folder is 7.51GB. Not such a big deal and all my apps work just fine as I've tested so far.

well, installing windows from an ISO has always been standard.

not long? I spent over an hour on a computer that was purchased last week (i5-3xxx with 8GB ram).  the upgrade itself WAS "seamless", but it took too long. and in no way are 7.51GB acceptable for something I'm never going to use again. Does it get deleted over time? what's the deal. a clean install would save me those 7.51GB (plus the 3.5GB of upgrade that Im sure windows kept somewhere).

and no. like I mentioned, the computer was first turned on last week, and the welcome screens have barely changed at all. (im not talking about those new tooltips, Im talking about the EULA, the account thing, and then "please wait while windows..." ). they are displaying the very same info I had to go through the other day. "oh hey, this is a reminder of the crap we already bothered you with last week".

I wish Microsoft provided the full Windows 8.1 iso just in case a problem came up and you had to reinstall Windows 8. You would then have to install Windows 8 over again then install 8.1, which would be a headache.

Maybe you will be able to slipstream the update into win8 ISO like normal window updates?

Something wrong with your system them. I have a Dell OptiPlex 745 with a Athlon 64 x2 5200+ and 4GB of RAM and a 160GB 7200RPM HDD. This system is old as hell and it finished in 25-30mins as I said which INCLUDES the downloading time. Did it this morning when I got into work because I wanted to see how long it would take. I was back to my login screen and working again in no time.

I'm domain controlled system so maybe that accounts for some of the difference? Dunno, but it definitely didn't take 1hr to complete. My boss would have been killing me by then.
