Check your data such as photos, apps, etc in that folder before you delete.

Well, yes you can. But if there's anything that didn't carry over with the update, it's inside that folder. So check it first and see if there's anything you need before deleting it.

yes you can get rid of it but use "Disk Cleanup" to delete it safely

Unless you're short on space, I'd wait a week or two to make sure nothing's missing and everything works right. Use Disk Cleanup to remove it then, after you're sure everything's ok.
