Zachary Jankowski, who turned 17 on Sept. 24, is scheduled for a preliminary examination Thursday on six felony charges including two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and assault. The incident occurred Sept. 1 at the River Bend Apartments, located at Warren and Merriman roads, where the defendant and the girl both live. "They were acquainted. The girl was walking to the pool by herself," said Westland Police Lt. Todd Adams. The girl was lured or grabbed and taken into a nearby changing room where she was raped and also choked, said Adams. "She was able to leave after he was finished. Afterward, she went and told her mom what had happened," he said. Jankowski was arrested that same evening. He was still 16 at that time and was initially taken into custody as a juvenile. On Sept. 6, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office obtained a court order that moved the charges against Jankowski from the Family Division Court to the Wayne County Circuit Court Criminal Division where he is charged as an adult. A preliminary examination for Jankowski is scheduled for Thursday before 18th District Court Judge Mark McConnell. A not guilty plea was entered for Jankowski. First, the assault took place at Hines Park Apartments, not River Bend, although both apartment complexes are located at different corners of Warren and Merriman Roads. Now, for the latest news. I was in the courtroom of Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Vera Massey Jones this morning to witness the sentencing of Zachary Jankowski. Probably the only smart thing Zachary ever did in his life was to plead guilty and spare everyone the emotional strain and the financial expense of a trial. The judge sentenced him to nine to thirty five years in prison, which means he is eligible for parole in eight years and one month (assuming he gets credit for the last eleven months he served in Wayne County Jail awaiting trial). The judge also ordered him to be sent to a prison facility comprised mostly of inmates closer to Zachary's age (he'll be 18 in September). While I was not real happy with the sentencing, since I would prefer thirty five years to life in the toughest prison we've got, there was one bit of good news. Zachary had a large bump on the back of his head, made quite noticeable with his brush haircut. I heard that he was moved to a different jail facility due to the other inmates bullying him. Personally, I hope he gets beaten regularly until he finally gets beaten to death. And how did this rapist of a beautiful nine year old girl react when he learned he will be spending at least nine years in prison? He cried like a little kid. When the two Wayne County Sheriff deputies started to escort him out of the courtroom, Mr. Not-so-toughguy fell to the floor, crying and wailing loudly. This was not the first time that Zachary attempted to sexually assault a younger child. It wasn't his second attempt, either. But tragically, it was the first time he actually got punished for it. Oh, and I'm very good friends with the mother of the rape victim, as well as the victim herself, and the rest of the family. The reason I posted this message was to serve as a follow up, in case anybody was wondering whatever happened to that vile disgusting piece of filth.
