NoUserName
After goggling a lot of hours for a security too to be used with windows 7 I've found many kind of security wholes including virus, warms, threads, spyware, ad aware, Trojans, ...etc plus a need for a firewall as well. so please give me a break and tell me what tool to use because every review telling XYZ software is the best ... and it vary from website to another. So what shall I do? Also does the free solution is good enough or not?
+BudMan MVC Posted October 19, 2013 MVC Share Posted October 19, 2013 "plus a need for a firewall as well." It has a firewall built in.. I can assure you my install is clean, and i am not even using the internal firewall, its off - since my local network is secure with no hostiles on it, etc. Are you not behind a nat router/firewall? What is local to your machine that you need to firewall against? Or let me guess you think you should get asked every single time you run something if it should be allowed to access the network.. Dude if you didn't want it to do what it does - why did you run it in the first place? If it bad file -- you ran it, its too late already what is the firewall going to do? I just use MSE (microsoft security essentials) Good enough for my needs - only thing it has ever really warned me about is security tools ;) If I have concerns about some exe I might want to run, I scan it with online totalvirus for example. And if concerns about a file would only run it in a sandbox, etc. So not sure what you want a break from - yeah your going to get different reviews about different applications or tools from different websites.. Many of them depends on who paid them more, etc. As to your threats - those are going to be there no matter what OS you run, its just the OSes that have the largest market share are targeted the most.. This only makes sense when creating such code.. Do you right your code to work on 5% of the planets PCs or do you write it to work on 80% etc.. +Warwagon MVC Posted October 19, 2013 MVC Share Posted October 19, 2013 Personally I think MSE is a piece of crap. I recommend and use Avast free, it's light weight and effective. It's also VERY VERY important to keep Windows and 3rd party applications like Flash, Java (remove it if you don't need it) and Adobe reader. A GREAT program to check your system for out of date 3rd party applications is patchmypc http://www.patchmypc.net Hum 1 Share
episode
I used to use MSE on everything, my own and customers PCs. It has gone downhill greatly, and even MS has said its not meant to be used by itself. I've been switching everything to Avast.
yowanvista
Avast is has basically turned into adware, it constantly nags you to upgrade to their paid versions and the thing is full of social crap. Avast thinks that most users are noobs and keeps bundling scam-like features. I wouldn't recommend it. Stick to MSE and you'll be fine.
Raa
Another vote for MSE (free) here. Or if you want better protection, i'd recommend ESET's NOD32. Hands down winner. (Y)
nabz0r Veteran Posted October 20, 2013 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2013 My vote would also goes to MSE if you don't want to pay for it, but if you're willing to pay I'd recommend ESET and I can recommend SEP (symantec endpoint protection). BudMan, gave you great examples if you have concerns about an exe file. (Y)
Coi
I recommend avast as well. (and don't scare yourself too much by reading things on the internet) It's also VERY VERY important to keep Windows and 3rd party applications like Flash, Java (remove it if you don't need it) and Adobe reader. I assume you accidently a word there? Dick Montage 1 Share
