+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted October 19, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted October 19, 2013 The German magazine ComputerBild is currently running an analysis with a PS4 debug unit. They have measured the unit's noise level while navigating the system menu and compared it to the original PS3. After 10 minutes of operation PS3: 0.83 sone PS4: 0.815 sone According to the magazine, a "slight noise" is audible from 40cm (= 15.75 inches) distance. After 60 minutes of operation PS3: 2.1 sone PS4: 0.83 sone A sone is a unit of perceived loudness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sone (with examples). firey
as long as it is quieter than the 360 im good. Never heard my ps3 over the tv.. whereas my buddies 360 could be heard over his tv at a reasonable volume. margrave 1 Share

firey
I suppose your buddies have the older versions. No clue, it got really hot and was really loud. I assume it was an early one. I called it a space heater. Torolol 1 Share
123456789A
I guess that's ok, but this isn't really valuable information since it didn't measure loudness while actually stressing the system (playing a game). bjorndori and Thief000 2 Share
spenser.d
I mean I guess it's good to know, but this really hasn't been an issue for most people when it comes to consoles...ever. It'd be news if it was loud :P

The Xbox S actually doesn't make a sound and it's cooler. Thief000 1 Share
torrentthief
which version of the ps3 did they test? fat, slim, super slim? If it was the slim or super slim then the ps4 must be bloody quiet according to those results.
NightScreams
I don't know how loud 1 sone or any other number sone sounds to really compare this too. I do know the ps3 when loading disc and HD data is loud enough to be annoying, I suspect similar from PS4 in all reality. Everyone talks about fan noise but there's always disc and HD on top of that as well.
LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted October 20, 2013 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2013 yeah but how loud will it be a year after purchase after its been sitting in an entertainment center hardly ventilated and heavily used :P

M_Lyons10
I suppose your buddies have the older versions. It still wasn't acceptable. lol I had a 360 (And loved it), and I'm getting a One, but there's no excuse for a console to be as loud as the early 360 models were... I'm pretty sure the specs were excusable to some extent. We've talked about the these kinds of limitations for the past decade...I'm only 20, why am I even. Nashy
No clue, it got really hot and was really loud. I assume it was an early one. I called it a space heater. The old ones (original shape when they came out) were very loud. It was the CD Rom drive, and it was a real pain in the ass. Sounds like it's going to take off. The newer slims are far quieter. I can't even hear my ps3... Nashy 1 Share
trooper11
Darn I was hoping for a more complete break down of the noise levels under different conditions. Its nice to get a little info though. After seeing the designs of the next gen consoles, both sound capable of delivering a quiet package, but I want to see how they do in real life. My PS3 Slim and 360 S are fairly quiet, but you always have to be cautious about first versions of new hardware.

+Eternal Tempest MVC Posted October 20, 2013 MVC Share Posted October 20, 2013 I had the 1st model Xbox Slim (internal hard drive) model and the dvd sounded like a jet engine taking off. However, I contacted Microsoft tech support, and they replaced the drive under warranty, and it's sound significantly less.
compl3x
Interesting little piece of info, but one would hope in this day and age making a console's operational noise not resemble an Apache helicopter should be pretty easy. Being able to install games to a HDD should reduce the amount of read access the drive has to do so you would think that would reduce a lot of the noise. But I guess I'm still not completely trusting of these companies when it comes to a first version of a new device. We will see. soniqstylz 1 Share
Vandalsquad
which version of the ps3 did they test? fat, slim, super slim? If it was the slim or super slim then the ps4 must be bloody quiet according to those results. "By comparison, the first version of the PS3" Wanted to know the answer to this also. My original fat PS3 wasn't that quiet compared to my ps3 slim or 360 slim. Not that I can compare now since it's been YLOD since a year after release. Ryoken
One would assume they would be testing the PS4 against the current Retail PS3 model.. cause any other comparison would just be stupid.
JonnyLH
Considering the amount they've got in there with the nature of heat with APU's I'm intrigued how they've managed what they've done. Sony I want to see some gut shots!
