PS4 will support 1.5TB SATA replacement drive

Recommended Posts

The PlayStation 4's hard drive will be able to be replaced with a 1.5TB model, thanks to the increased size of its hard-drive dock.

Good news, PlayStation tinkerers! Not only will you be able to easily pull apart your console to fit in a replacement hard drive, the size of said drive has increased from 9.5 millimetres to 12.5 millimetres.

The news comes by way of German website Computer Bild, which got its hands on, and in, a developer console. It seems Sony is continuing its tradition of allowing customers tomodify their consoles, with an easily removable and replaceable hard drive.

Like the PS3 before it, the PS4's drive can be replaced with a 2.5-inch SATA drive, but the height of drives that will fit inside a PS3 is 9.5 millimetres. Admittedly, 9.5-millimetre 1.5TB drives started hitting the market just a couple of months ago, but the height increase in the PS4 means that the machine is primed for when drive manufacturers manage to squeeze more space into the 12.5-millimetre form factor.

The drive dock is also fitted with Phillips-head screws, meaning that you don't need a fancy screwdriver to take it out.

However, Sony really is making the PS4 the console of the future: it only supports HDMI out, dispensing entirely with A/V RCA/RGB and SCART. Your old CRT ? which, let's be honest, makes it really hard to read on-screen text and make out fine detail when playing PS3 and Xbox 360 games anyway ? is out.

Great news!  I'm sure it wasn't too difficult to increase the size of the dock an extra 3mm.  I love that you can upgrade the hard drive with whatever you want; I just upgraded my PS3's not too long ago to a 7200rpm 500gb HD.

At first read I was a little surprised that the PS4 was HDMI-only, but after thinking about it, it's time to go HDMI-only and not support old TVs anymore.  For comparison, I wonder if the Xbone will be following suit or if it will still support A/V.

2.5" drive, not 3.5" which are normal desktop drives. :p I doubt you have a $150 1.5TB 2.5" drive just sitting around ;)

That's good to know. It still doesn't replace the advantage of using 3.5" drives externally storage space wise, but its a nice step up.

I'm sure I'll have something of that size in my ps4 before its all over, unless they decide to add full support for externals down the line.

Considering it ships with a 500gb HDD, I'll be surprised if I need to upgrade it.  However for those that will store movies, and lots of games.. it's good to know that it supports current drive sizes.

That is true, 500GB is a lot, but considering the fact that all games require an install now, its not silly to think you could fill up such a drive fairly quickly if your a regular gamer. I'm not sure what the average file size will be for most games, but its not going to be small. You could conceivably fill it up after installing 10-15 games.

I had 500GB and it was perfectly fine. Then I bought PS+... and now I have 1TB and I'm quickly filling it up.

I find it important to find out if the PS4 supports TRIM so that someone with a ton of money on hand can put an SSD in it. Also, will it be SATA III?
