Healthcare.gov has 500 million lines of code?!

Recommended Posts

Seriously?! 500 million?!!!!!

That's the report that is coming out today...

for comparision

Windows 2000 had 30 million lines

Vista had about 45 million lines

Windows 7 had an estimated 38 million lines (they slimmed down windows from vista a lot apparently)

the space shuttle ran on 400,000 lines of code

heck I write insurance processing software, and our entire system which even processes 834 XML records that healthcare.gov uses only has 1.1 million lines of code

Someone needs to teach these people code reusability and not write spaghetti code

I heard "five million" lines of code, and I thought of Dennis Nedry from Jurassic Park:

"Do you know anybody who can network eight connection machines and debug two million lines of code for what I bid for this job? 'Cause if you can, I'd like to see 'em try!"

No, it has 6 million lines of code, had 500,000 sign ups. Someone crossed the numbers somewhere

I don't know where they got the numbers from but that is what multiple sources are quoting now.. and Verizon (gov called them in now to help) is saying it needs to rewrite approx. 5 million lines (from another source)

According to the New York Times - "According to one specialist, the Web site contains about 500 million lines of software code." not verified

and also from the NYT - "One specialist said that as many as five million lines of software code may need to be rewritten before the Web site runs properly." again not verified

hmmm...unnamed "specialists"...yup I believe 'em.

LOL figured that should narrow down those lines of code, much easier to fix later on if needed :p

Maybe that's where I heard the five million lines of code--what needs to be rewritten, not the total number of lines of code. :)

Whoever wrote the code should be shot, I'm sure an amateur coder could have done a better job, and this company is supposedly run by professionals?

The US gov't and technology is like a baby with a laptop. It boggles my mind how the NSA has all this high tech spying technology, yet the government cant design a website that full works.

General the problem behind the Healthcare website is that there were no over site on progress, outsource test and cheapest bid for the project wins. I can understand why they go with the cheapest bid but there should also be guidelines on who can bid on this type of project. If they do already which I would think they have then there guidelines are way too low. $100 million to design the front and backend and run a website should not have that much issues if they did it right. Amazon spends about $200 million a quarter and gets millions of traffic a day with no or minimum issues.

Center tag isn't even closed...

Anyway... at 500 million lines, they would be counting the lines of code for the Windows servers, Linux servers, SQL servers... all the code running on the machine, plus the website code :P

I doubt that the website has 500 million lines of code. Maybe all of the separate backend public and private health care related systems together, but not just the site.

They're likely pulling a Scotty, throwing around the 500 million number to try and over sell the complexity and difficulty in order to get some sympathy for their mistakes.

they got excited that the site is up and running... and made a typo about the amount of the code lines are being used...

They meant 50 lines of code.... not 500 million lines of code...

Even the most awesome programme in history, Windows Solitaire, doesn't have half that amount of lines of code.

the difference is..the NSA directly employs a huge number programmers, where as HHS just sent the contract to the lowest bidder, and told them they had 4 months to get it done.
