Game DVR, Skype, Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, and the NFL on X1 require Gold

Recommended Posts

Wow, I'm so excited to install the One as my media center in my family room.  I know it's not for everybody but it's exactly what I'm looking for.   The one thing I'm still skeptical about is movie streaming.  I don't know why but my Apple TV can stream all my movie library I have stored on my computer, as well as Netflix and other services without a hiccup.  Both the 360 and PS3 stop and start when streaming movies and Netflix usually starts non-HD before it switches to HD and may even drop out of HD again.  I don't know how the Apple TV can do these things when the consoles can't but I'm hoping they somehow manage to "fix" the streaming.

I feel like I knew this already, but it's still kind of lame to hear it. I really don't understand why Microsoft continues to require Gold for this stuff when Sony doesn't require PS+ for any of it on the PS4. You would think they would want to compete, or at least make it a challenge.

Definite answer, there was lots of arguing about Netflix a while back.

"Online multiplayer, Game DVR, Skype, Netflix, Hulu, ESPN and the NFL on Xbox One require Xbox Live Gold membership (sold separatley) and/or additional requirements"

There is a key here:

Definition of or in English

Syllabification: (or)

Pronunciation: /?r/

conjunction

2 introducing a synonym or explanation of a preceding word or phrase:the espionage novel, or, as it is known in the trade, the thriller

3 otherwise (used to introduce the consequences of something not being done or not being the case):hurry up, or you?ll miss it all

4 introducing an afterthought, usually in the form of a question:John?s indifference?or was it??left her unsettled

5 literary either:to love is the one way to know or God or man

noun

(often OR) Electronics

a Boolean operator that gives the value one if at least one operand (or input) has a value of one, and otherwise has a value of zero.

(also OR gate) a circuit that gives an output signal if there is a signal on any of its inputs.

Its clear they were talking about a circuit that gives an output signal if there was a signal in any of those services ;)

While its disappointing to think that they have not changed their stance of offering these media apps outside of Gold, the above poster does make a good point:

It clearly says 'and/or' after listing those services. So it leaves it a bit ambiguous.

I would say that its still likely that most of those will require Gold, but some may drop out of it.

I will have a Gold membership just as I will have a PS+ membership for multiplayer and other features, so this isn't terrible news. I was just hoping to see them change for those that don't wish to pay for Gold.

Microsoft wants to continue charging you for things everyone else lets you do with no additional fee? I think we all knew that's how it'd go with them.

So much for making this a living room device.

I have an Xbox 360 that was purchased for my brother last Christmas. He dropped it off for storage at my place for a while and I figured I would make it into a living room device than once I saw how everything required XBL Gold I balked and put it in a box in the basement. For a gamer XBL gold makes sense, but for me it doesn't. All my games are PC and I'm not buying anything to play on the Xbox so, essentially, paying twice for access to Netflix just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

That is added only to say that Netflix will charge you for their service in addition to paying for Xbox Live Gold. So you can use that to argue that you've paid for XBL Gold so you now should be getting free Netflix, Hulu, etc.

I'm more worried by the part "content may vary by country" than anything else.

If you want to sell something as teh entertainment center then you have to make the content avalaible everywhere you sell it.

I still feel like the TV part of the One will flop outside of USA/UK because of the lack of content and support.

Policies change with time and when the competition is pushing you hard then you'll have to change your ways.  Still, odds are lots of users will have Gold and will now also have PS+ because they want to play online.   The thing is, I paid for gold on and off when I wanted to MP a bit and I'm in a market that doesn't get Netflix, doesn't get Hulu and so on.  It has zero effect on me and others like me who also have a PlayStation and pay for PS+ and don't get access to those services either with or without one.

MS has been doing a number of it's free Netflix weekends and I think they did a free Hulu weekend as well?  IMO those have been tests to see how it goes and if the demand is there.   I'm betting that this policy will change and the media apps will go out of gold because of a few things, the competition for one and how it looks as a negative for them and also how they can replace those things with other Gold features that make more sense.    For example gold members already get the ability to share their gold multiplayer ability with those using their home system without gold for free.    I'm sure they're also going to add back the digital content sharing they originally had planned early-mid 2014 which will be another benefit of Gold to.   Add in other things game related and the need to beef up Gold with the other things isn't needed anymore.

I'll gladly play for xbox live..

Haven't had any downtime, apps get consistently updated and service has been improving.  If it was like Xbox live 10 years ago where the only thing we had was voice synthesizer in game and online play, i would have long since gone on..

but, i've had an xbox that has had many features, many upgrades, many apps published and for 30 bucks a year or cheaper if you know what you're doing, it's been a rather good deal.

i pay more money for a park pass to go fishing a few times a year than to use something that is on every day playing games and tv..

It does say and/or but that is directly followed by "Additional" which means that the part before the and/or is the base requirement, and that there may be more fees/conditions ontop of the base.

Nope, there have been reports of some games not requiring PSN+ it's up to the developers.

Well if you are going to get technical, shouldn't you drop the word "Nope" from your sentence?  Unless you list the specific games that will have free online multiplayer for PS4.  Just saying in general, "Nope" PSN+ is not required would be incorrect.  Or did Sony announce something about online multiplayer being free for ALL games?

Regardless, I really only mentioned it because the Xbox/PS political style arguments where people will complain until they are out of breath that xbox does something, but I don't hear a word when PS does it.  In my opinion, if you are going to complain about xbox charging for services, you need to include PS in that same complaint.

Yes, some free to play games can work outside of it, along with mmos.

MS is also making this move for the X1. Some games in that genre won't require Gold. They haven't said when that would start, so the ps4 will likely have such games first.

And that's it. You can watch videos, listen to music, browse the web, and so on to your hearts content on that platform without having to pay extra to do it. Just like on every other device you own.

That could be true. Silly wording making it unclear.

Yeah, I still hope MS sees the light on this and changes those plans. They have a chance to turn this around if they announce an app store that allows devs to offer apps without requiring Gold.

All we can do is keep talking about it and let them hear it.

I understand that it was not a dig at PS or Sony, and more as a "Well.. the other guys are doing it too".  However, I did want to point out that it is not entirely the case.

five that I see are MMORPGS, you can google if you want:

DC Universe

Deep Down

Blacklight Retrubution

Warframe

Planet Side 2

I hope MS does the same, for those that get the XBox One.  Though to be 100% honest.. I think most people will buy it anyways (PSN+ or XBL Gold) just to ensure they have the full package.

Though I can see cases where people don't want to pay for things they already have to pay a subscription for.  Paying twice is a pain.

Agreed, it isn't entirely the case for all games with PS4...that is a fair point.

Yeah, because people don't care.  That's why they have tens of millions of gold subs out there, a number that keeps growing.

I'm not trying to say it wouldn't be nice for the to make this stuff free, but as a business model, it makes no sense for them to do so because it's making them money.

The MMO not being behind Gold is something developers are in talks with MS over, and I expect will change as well to match whatever Sony is doing.     It's all about competition and if big MMO type games can't come to XB1 in the future exactly because of Gold being the issue then MS will be forced to change their policy on it, if they don't already have plans to do so, I don't think they've gotten a reply out on that subject yet when asked and the last thing I remember is that they're looking at it or something to that extent.

It's about competition, these policies will have to change because of it, in the end we're all going to be better off for it.
