It's been five months since the first glimpse of an M235 with little camouflage hit the web.

 

The 2-series will officially debut on Friday, however, Auto Bild has already released some photos of the upcoming model.

Basically, BMW has refreshed their model numbering system. They aren't filling any gaps.

 

From now on, all coupes produced by BMW will receive an even number, while the sedans and the 1-series hatchback will keep an odd index.

 

So, BMW 2-series is a replacement for the former 1-series coupe and cabrio.

 

Likewise, the new 3-series based coupe is called the 4-series.

The M235i is probably my perfect car. Small, practical, smart looking, and fast as hell. And with that ZF auto gearbox, great for the commute when traffic builds up. Will be interesting to see what UK prices will be like considering how competitive the M135i is.

I for one like all these different options from the German manufacturers. The M235i is probably a perfect cheap entry into a true BMW. I just hope it's cheap, light, and powerful. This could be a hell of a car to compete with something like the Audi S3. The M2 should also be interesting. The car I'm most interested from BMW's upcoming lineup is the M3/M4 Grancoupe

2014 BMW 2-Series Coupe unveiled, goes on sale in March

 

 

Larger and more luxurious than the 1-Series Coupe

Germany's worst keep secret is finally official as BMW has taken the wraps off the 2014 2-Series Coupe.

Designed to replace the 1-Series Coupe, the 2-Series Coupe promises to raise the bar in terms of "dynamic ability, aesthetic appeal and emotional allure."

Looking sporty and luxurious, the model has a distinctive front fascia with a unique grille, bespoke headlights and large air intakes. There's also subtle contours, an upward sweeping character line and L-shaped taillights.

The 2-Series is slightly larger than its predecessor as it is 72mm longer, 32mm wider and has a wheelbase that has been stretched by 30mm. This results in a more accommodating cabin that boasts additional head- and legroom as well as a larger trunk that holds up to 390 liters (13.7 cubic feet) of luggage.

The cabin is heavily influenced by the 1-Series and comes equipped with cloth seats and satin silver trim. Options include Dakota leather upholstery, brushed aluminum or fineline stream wood trim and a 6.5- or 8.8-inch iDrive display.

As usual, the 2-Series will be offered in Sport Line, Modern Line and the M Sport trim. The latter adds an aerodynamic body kit, a revised grille and a chrome exhaust finisher. There's also a sport-tuned suspension (which reduces the ride height by 10mm) and 17-inch M light alloy wheels. The model also boasts sport seats, aluminum hexagon trim, M-brand sill plates and revised instrumentation.

Under the hood, a variety of engines will be available. The 220i has a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder that develops 184 HP (135 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.0 seconds and hit a top speed of up to 235 km/h (146 mph).

On the diesel side, the 218d has a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine that churns out 143 HP (105 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. This allows the car to dash from 0-100 in 8.9 seconds (8.6 seconds with the optional eight-speed automatic) and max out at 213 km/h (132 mph).

Likewise, the 220d has a 2.0-literTwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine with 184 HP (135 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the coupe to run from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds (7.1 seconds with the optional eight-speed automatic) and top out at 230 km/h.

The 225d also uses the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine but it develops 218 HP (160 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. The extra power allows the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 242 km/h (150 mph).

Lastly, the M235i has a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six that cranks out 326 HP (240 kW) and 450 Nm (322 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the car to run from 0-100 in five seconds (4.8 seconds with the optional eight-speed automatic) and hit a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The 2014 BMW 2-Series will go on sale in Germany in March.

Update: BMW USA has announced the 228i will be priced from $33,025 while the M235i will retail for $44,025.

Size-wise, this 2-series is very close to one of my most favourite bimmers of all time, the 90's 3-series, E36!

I don't care for the lines on the newer Bimmers. I agree with you, late 90's early 2000's 3-series. I dug up some pics of my 01 325, you just can't beat the front end on these, IMO...

E30, E36 and E46 are all beautiful cars..

 

This 2 series seems like a waste of time, so im guessing its like 1.5 inches longer than the 1 series but 2 inches shorter than a 3? Who's that specfic??

I love the E30, E36, E46, and the new/current F30. I am trying to look for a E36 or E46 M3, probably leaning towards E46.

I've just fallen in love with this second series. I think this auto is gorgeous. She is a true BMW - compact, stiff, and damn powerful with RWD :) (Or is Bimmer a he? :D)

 

I also think that it's remarkable how BMW and Audi have differentiated and split between each other this niche market.

 

Audi offers the A3/S3 as a four-door sedan and a three- or five-door hatch.

 

BMW offers 1-series as a five-door hatch (this one matches) and a two-door coupe in a classic composition proportions-wise (2-series)! No 1-series sedan from BMW is expected :) And Audi isn't planning a two-door coupe version of A3 :D
