Members have to add us to conversations for us to see the PM's, in extreme cases we have to look on the server (same for any site btw), but that can only be accessed by very few people.

My god! You have server access? And you use it in extreme cases???

Well there goes my plans to use the neowin PM system to to facilitate my international underground distribution system for illegal goods. I was going to call it mafia_69... :shiftyninja:  :shiftyninja:  :shiftyninja:

As it isn't really data that needs encrypting. Saying this, it could well be encrypted.

I'm just getting across that it is a non-issue and like most sites if data needs accessing and if it does, Neobond would probably be the only one to access it.

It does amaze me how unaware some people are of how technology works.. when you're a system administrator and you get full administrative access to a system, it's a simple fact you've got the ability to view pretty much anything on that system. But as a system administrator, you should have the morals to know that it's wrong to do that and that you would only view that content if it were absolutely necessary - whatever that reason may be. This wouldn't just be the case for Neowin, but for ANY forum and virtually any system you have an account on - there will be a sysadmin on there who has rights to see anything on it. Hate to tell you this crushing news!

Exactly, we have a privacy policy as well. We take pride in not sharing members details with third parties.

"my pm's are personal, i'm so important , privacy is the cornerstone of my life...cry cry cry" is pretty much all I read. To be honest, no one cares. This is Neowin, I think the mods have better things to do that waste time reading through non important messages. Get over it.  :pinch:

That is a total lack of disrespect but Ill swallow my pride and not reply....

Being a system administrator there are things you should never have access to: Example, on a Exchange mail server, you should never have access to their passwords, only the ability to reset them. More so, now that I mention it, user's passwords on here and other message forums are indeed encrypted and cannot be viewed (the only way would be to get the encrypted password and deencrypt it using the algorithm it was encrypted with and even then, if it was salted...).

I mentioned after the original post, that I dont mind that Neowin goes thru my PMs as really I have nothing to hide. I just found it intresting that they CAN do it (thats what I understood when Neobond posted the original message).

Hello,
Why not? With Neowin's servers I dont think it would be a huge resource hog.

We recently got HTTPS access to Neowin....

And the NSA would still be able to read them..........just how far down the line do you want to go with the argument of weather they can or cannot be read by others?

If that's how you feel. I wouldn't use Internet forums. Pretty much any information you enter on s forum is accessible by an system administrator.

Hello,

I repeat that I dont care what Neowin or the NSA reads from me on the internet. Im just saying that Neowin CAN (which has been cleared up that they mostly cannot).

Neobond, please close this thread. People are starting to get out of hand

Well the question has been answered anyway, there doesn't appear to be a need to continue the discussion.
