Google breaks 2005 promise never to show banner ads

Recommended Posts

Google is testing banner ads on web search results - reneging on a 2005 promise that "there will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results page? Ever."

The company confirmed to the Guardian that it is testing a system with about 30 advertisers in the US in which it shows banner ads for companies including SouthWest Airlines on pages which include them in web search results.

The ads can take over large parts of the screen.

They used to be one of the good guys.  I've been using DuckDuckGo and other search engines a while now, and haven't used GMail's web interface for a while.  I like the fact that I got my name @ gmail with no numbers or anything weird in it because I was an early adopter, but some of their policy changes and the goings on with our federal government in recent years have made me consider setting up my own e-mail server just for myself and my immediate family.

I'm not a fan of google, but are you really going to get mad if, when you search for "southwest airlines," you're presented with an ad containing a bunch of links for Southwest Airlines?  You can try to make it look crappy by attaching the word 'ad' to it, but it's kind of exactly what you searched for.

I swear google are intent on butchering their services one by one. I don't use google search at all. Here's a search page for "Holiday in florida". I see 10 results. 8 of them are ads.

And I get 7 ads when doing the same search in Bing. Who cares. The ads are not intrusive and do not stear you away from what you are looking for.

Yes, thats exactly what I said. Read, understand, and then post.

Shocker here, and not everyone may know what I am about to say. But google is a AD company. Surprising, isnt it? Dont like their ads, no one is forcing anyone to use their services. People like to complain/bitch and moan on what a company does with the FREE services they provide. No one is forcing anyone to use these services.

Dodging the issue that the despicable company you so ardently defend has broken a promise they once made...

In case you forgot that was the subject of this thread.

If the ads blocked what I was looking for, made me scroll way down to view my results....that would be intrusive. They are not.

So Marissa Mayer, no longer with Google, made a comment 8yrs ago. I dont see anywhere where she sid she promises. Besides, 8yrs is a long time and things change. I bet if we nit pick enough, there are things that all companies say at one time and then later do the opposite. I just said i didnt care, period.

Just something else for people who have to much time on their hands to bitch about Google. That is all it is. Quite hilarious actually. And what is even more funny, people rag on one company about ads on their search site when anther company has silimar ads on theirs.

If I repeat the search on my 11" MacBook Air - I see nothing but ads without scrolling down.

Not me. Google or Bing, I dont have to scroll down at all. Even on my extra crappy Dell 13.3 in XPS system with crappy screen resoltion.

That's because you're searching for an ad-hot topic.

Search for holidays, new car, etc., obviously you're going to get lots of ads.. because companies want to sell you those things. Surely ads are what you're looking for? You can't type in such terms and expect not to see ads, surely?

Here's Ars Technica's take on it:

New banner ads push actual Google results to bottom 12% of the screen

Google has started adding banner ads to its search result pages, SearchEngineLand reported Wednesday. And they're not just skinny banner ads abutting the top edge of a page; in at least one case, users are treated to a big honking sponsored box dominating the site. In the case of Southwest Airlines, the banner ads mean only a paltry 12 percent of your browser window is dedicated to the search results you came looking for.

Maybe it's not intrusive until the ads take up more than 90% of the screen ;)

I was talking about the current ads.  The banner ads are in testing so cannot really comment since there is no telling if they will roll this out, or how the finished product will look.  Either way, I dont care since I block ads to begin with.
