Debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show

Porsche has released several new teaser images of the 2014 Macan.

Set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Macan will have an evolutionary design that borrows styling cues from the Cayenne. Notable highlights include an aggressive front fascia, a sloping roofline and LED-infused headlights. We can also see curvaceous bodywork and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but the crossover is expected to be offered with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 and a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 that develops 395 bhp (294 kW) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. We can also expect an entry-level engine and possibly a 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 254 bhp (189 kW). The engines will be connected to manual and PDK transmissions which send power to a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

The Macan will go into production in December and the mid-level S variant is expected to cost $52,000.

the lights on the back looks like screen tearing too.

 

So does the upper edge of the rear windows where it connects to the door windows in front, completely different angle and position.

2014 Porsche Macan compact SUV launched

Available with three engines

Porsche has introduced the 2014 Macan on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

It was a long and teaser-filled road but Porsche has finally revealed its baby Cayenne from which it has taken most of the design. The crossover is 4699mm long, 1923mm wide and 1624mm tall which makes it 146mm shorter, 16mm narrower and 82mm lower than its bigger brother. Compared to the Q5 on which is based upon, the Macan is 70mm longer, 24mm wider and 30mm lower.

It adopts a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement with variable damping control and an electro-mechanical steering system, while optionally available is an air suspension. Compared to the Audi Q5, the Macan's track widths are 35mm bigger at the front and 36mm at the back, while the suspension components are unique to this model. In addition, the software and geometry have been updated to make sure the Macan is "the most agile handling in its class."

Three engines will be available upon launch, starting out with the Macan S powered by a V6 3.0-liter twin-turbo developing 340 HP (250 kW) working together with a double-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission which enables the crossover to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.4 seconds or in 5.2s when the vehicle is fitted with the optional Sport Chrono package. It can hit a top speed of 158 mph (254 km/h) and will have a fuel consumption varying between 8.7 to 9.0 liters / 100 km, with corresponding CO2 emissions between 204 and 212 g/km.

Up next is the Macan S Diesel that gets a V6 3.0-liter turbo rated 258 HP (190 kW) good enough for a 0-62 mph run in 6.3 seconds (6.1s with Sport Chrono) and a maximum speed of 143 mph (230 km/h). With this engine the Macan will have a fuel consumption varying between 6.1 to 6.3 liters, with CO2 emissions between 159 and 164 g/km.

The range-topping Macan Turbo will make use of a V6 3.6-liter twin-turbo generating 400 HP (294 kW) which propels the vehicle to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds (4.6s with Sport Chrono) on its way to a top speed of 165 mph (266 km/h). Porsche says the flagship Macan has a fuel consumption between 8.9 to 9.2 liters / 100 km and emits between 208 and 216 g/km.

Later on during the car's lifespan there will be a new base model equipped with a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo engine providing 280 HP, along with a Macan Diesel with a 2.0-liter turbo. The duo will represent the first 4-cylinder-powered Porsche models since the demise of the 968 in 1995.

The Macan S and S Diesel ride on 18-inch alloys wrapped around in 235/60 R18 front and 255/55 R18 rear tires, while the Macan Turbo gets larger 19-inch rims with 235/55 R19 and 255/50 R19 rubbers. Clients can optionally configure their car with various wheel designs in sizes of up to 21 inches.

Available at German dealers next April, the Macan S and Macan S Diesel have a starting price of 57,930 EUR and are followed by the Macan Turbo from 79,826 EUR (VAT included). UK will get the new Macan also in April at these prices: Diesel S (43,300 GBP), S (43,300 GBP) and Turbo (59,300 GBP).

I don't get it, either be a niche car maker or don't. What would be the point of trying to compete in the mini suv class?

The Cayenne I like, but this one would have problems getting into a market dominated by the likes of ford, Nissan, Honda, (hell, any manufacturer that's already making cars this sized and class)

I have no doubt it will sell like hot cakes.

 

And the crowd that buys Porsches at the premium prices have long forgotten the last time they considered to purchase a Ford, a Nissan, or a Honda :)

 

A 30K car with cheap plastic and weak engines can't compete with a sporty luxurious car that costs twice as much :)

 

Porsche Macan is in its own segment, especially its Turbo version with 400HP.

Porsche Macan is in its own segment, especially its Turbo version with 400HP. 

I have no doubt neither, just the car does look to me like the illegitimate offspring from an 2010 Subaru Impreza and a Ford Kuga, and to be honest, I doubt with how much electronic gubbins they cram into cars nowadays this would be more reliable than a new sub 30k car, most car inspection failures nowadays if due to sensor malfunctions, and not because there's an actual fault with it's mechanicals.

(Just something a few mechanics have said in my area, cars failing M.O.T. inspections, some have even said had the sensor that cause the M.O.T. failure not been there, the car would have passed with flying colours)

But that's a different matter, it's still ugly :p

Horrible choice of a supercar manufacturer. Hate the Cayenne and now this. Where's a pic of that horrid Lamborghini 4x4 Urus so I can kill myself? (although that one looks better)

ummm no. Land Rover Evoque created the segment.

Back looks ok, but the front grill throws it off. I wish they would do a single piece grill (a la Audi). Also what a huge price difference between the S and the Turbo. If you option out the Turbo, you're looking at $100k+ easy.

Sorry ,mate, can't agree with you on this one.

 

I like Evoque, especially its 3-door version. Arguably, it's in its own niche market too.

 

However, Evoque is a latecomer. It's a fairly recent vehicle. And its most powerful version develops *only* 237HP. The price differential between the two cars is significant too.

 

Macan S (340HP) competes with Audi SQ5(349HP), BMW X3 XDrive35d (313HP), MB GLK 350 (302HP), and ,maybe, Infinity QX50 3.7 Hi-Tech (333HP).

 

Macan Turbo (400HP) leaves all of the above behind its tail and no other can come even close to it. Maybe if Audi ever releases Audi RS Q5 it could compete with it, but I don't see it happening. One model would be cannibalizing sales from another in-house model.

 

Another potential competitor could come in the form of a real GLK AMG (presently it's only an exterior package) or X3 M.

Well there is the upcoming Mercedes GLA 45 AMG (same engine as the A 45 & CLA 45) - 2.0L Turbocharged engine putting down a whopping 355 hp/332 lb-ft tq. That 2.0L is looking tempting, not to mention it's quite a feat.

GLA is a smaller car. It will compete with BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Evoque.

Agreed - with all the talk of Evoque, I figured might as well toss in the GLA. I'd rather have the GLA 45 than the Evoque. The Macan is more comparable to the GLK. If only Mercedes gave the GLK the AMG treatment (engine wise)...
