I guess this is both a software and hardware question but here goes. I have an external USB 3.0 1TB Western Digital Drive, the model escapes me at the moment. My issue is, even though I do not use Windows Search and have indexing turned off and made sure the properties of the drive do not allow indexing of the drive I still hear it thrashing even when I and the system are idle. I have looked and everything that does maintenance while idle is turned off, such as, Norton Task Scheduler and anything in Windows Task Scheduler etc.. Windows Defrag auto is disabled and I do not use the monitoring features of either True Image or Perfect disc and apps and services for those are set to manual and are not running when this happens. I also found that my USB polling rate was set to 1000 and read that turning that down can actually minimize such thrashing so I dropped it to 250 through my mouse drives and it actually did, who knew and why-TF. But it still occurs though not as often or as dramatic. What can be accessing the drive or flat out what can be happening to cause this?
The strange thing is, even though it's thrashing like it's being accessed, when I go to access the drive it takes a few seconds to access it as if it has to spin up to be accessed.
I am so confused. What the f**k is doing this?
Thanks for helping me keep my sanity!
