win8.1 Disable Windows Defender / AntiMalware Executable?

I am an Administrator. This is Windows 8.1 Professional.

 

regedit - permission denied

task manager - permission denied

admin cmd net stop - permission denied

services.msc - permission denied

msconfig - does nothing

Attempting to disable Windows Defender through Windows Defender GUI - doesn't disable Windows Defender - it is still running in backgroung

 

And no I am not interested in reasons to keep it running in the background. I want my administrative rights back.

I think Microsoft uses Windows Defender for protection until a different anti-virus program is installed and then it is automatically deactivated. Just trying to help, a little.

Can you perform a system restore to a time before you had all those permission denied problems?

 

If not, maybe try booting to Safe Mode and using the built-in Administrator account?

Looks as if it's deeply baked in, you can't even uninstall it but installing another antivirus product should disable it.

Are you sure it's Windows Defender doing those things? It shouldn't block system applications from running, especially given they are write protected since Vista which should make them almost impossible to infect with viruses. Did you recently install software restriction policies or something similar? If so, sometimes UAC can block things even on admin accounts if you don't explicitly run something as admin

You just need to open windows defender, go to settings > administrator > and uncheck "turn on this app".

Its an antivirus application -- you wouldn't want it to just turn off via simple normal user interactive methods.. Or you running some simple code as you could do a simple net stop service and now no antivirus, etc.

^ exactly!!  What part did you not understand?  And who cares if he is administrator, its an antivirus application.

Turning it off is foolish, stupid, and irresponsible. It's like saying "I am the admin so I should be able to turn off the ability to boot to the OS, or I should be able to turn off the ability to use the mouse". Yes you are the admin, and you CAN turn these off. You know how? Take a hammer and distroy your PC. That'll shut em off alright!

Exactly. Services is a the go-to for turning off things that you don't want running.

And is there an API or command line way of doing that?  Like there is with net stop service?  Or quick edit to the registry?

 

What is meant by normal user interactive is a way for a non elevated or even elevated account to be able to turn off the application without have to manipulate windows or screens..  If a normal account can send say a net stop command, or even a elevated account net stop antivirusservice -- that would not be good ;)  Or manipulate a simple reg key with a simple command

Windows 8.1 isn't Windows XP, you can't just simply turn things off even with being the admin. You have to go through the proper channels like +BudMan is saying.

 

Heck, there's some services you can't disable at all anymore, UAC for example, is not able to be disabled at all.

In a way I like that they are taking away the ability to easily administer computers, but it does make it slightly more difficult being that I have to google how to do something...No way in windows 8 to delete a wireless profile by point and click, cli only

I don't have a win8 machine that has wireless to test this myself, but are you saying they removed "manage wireless networks" from the network and sharing center? If so that is pretty ridiculous indeed. I do tech support for an ISP and removing saved profiles can often solve certain wireless issues.

 

Have you checked to see if it can be done via metro's "PC settings" screen? Maybe they moved it there.

I would, but I don't have access to a windows 8 machine that has wireless atm, so manage wireless networks wouldn't show for me either way.
